Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, and Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. But users with compatible PCs can upgrade instead of buying a computer. Microsoft’s replacement advice applies to older PCs that do not meet Windows 11 requirements; the “nearly half a billion” figure is not established as a Microsoft count of users it told to buy a PC.
What Microsoft actually recommends
Microsoft says Windows 10 devices continue to work after support ends, but standard free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes have ended. Its advice is to move to Windows 11. For an older PC that cannot meet Windows 11’s requirements, Microsoft lists buying a new PC as an option—not as an order to every Windows user.
Microsoft’s guidance also describes a route for computers that meet the requirements: users can purchase and download Windows 11 Home or Pro, or buy it from a retailer. So the first question is whether your current PC is compatible, not whether a headline suggests you must replace it. Microsoft’s unsupported-Windows guidance sets out these alternatives.
Where the nearly half-billion figure comes from
The sourced figures do not show Microsoft telling nearly half a billion users to buy a computer. Microsoft said in a June 24, 2025 post that Windows powered over 1.4 billion monthly active devices. That is a measure of Windows devices overall, not Windows 10 users receiving a purchase instruction. Microsoft’s Windows Experience Blog gives that broader figure.

A December 1, 2025 TechSpot report attributed estimates to Dell COO Jeffrey Clarke: about 500 million Windows machines were too old to run Windows 11, while roughly another 500 million could run it but had not been upgraded. These are reported estimates about machines, not a Microsoft count of users it urged to buy a PC. Neither number establishes the headline claim.
Check your PC before deciding
Microsoft recommends using the PC Health Check app or consulting the official Windows 11 requirements to determine whether a computer is eligible. Its compatibility announcement describes both options: Microsoft’s Windows 10 end-of-support announcement.

- Check compatibility with Microsoft’s PC Health Check app or the official Windows 11 requirements.
- If the PC is compatible, decide whether upgrading it meets your needs. Buying another computer is not the only path.
- If it is not compatible, weigh replacement against continuing to use it with the understanding that standard security fixes have ended.
Can you keep using a Windows 10 PC?
Yes. A Windows 10 computer does not stop working when support ends. Microsoft’s end-of-service notice says, “Your PC will still work, but we recommend moving to Windows 11.” The change is that, after October 14, 2025, Windows 10 Home and Pro no longer receive standard free software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. Without those standard fixes, the device no longer receives the updates that help protect it. Microsoft’s end-of-service notice explains the effect on the PC.
Microsoft has separate Extended Security Updates guidance. Check its current eligibility, enrollment terms, and availability directly before relying on that route; the standard-support end date does not by itself establish an individual device’s ESU options. Microsoft’s ESU guidance.

How to choose between upgrading, replacing, or staying put
| Option | When it makes sense | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Upgrade the existing PC | The computer meets Windows 11 requirements and still suits your needs. | Check compatibility first; compare the upgrade route and cost with replacement. |
| Replace it with a Windows 11 PC | The current PC is incompatible, or you independently want a newer computer. | Choose around your workload, budget, display and input needs, and warranty. For laptops, also consider battery life and repairability. A premium or AI-branded model is not established as necessary. |
| Continue using Windows 10 | You have a reason to keep the current setup and accept the support change. | The PC still functions, but standard security fixes and technical assistance have ended. Check Microsoft’s live ESU terms if considering extended support. |
If replacing the machine is the right choice, compare Windows 11 laptops or Windows 11 desktop PCs by the work you need them to do and the support you want—not by the headline’s number. Microsoft’s end-of-support product page names Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung among PC makers, and Best Buy and Costco among retailers.
