Raymond Lewis Jones’s Raspberry Pi PhotoBooth is a browser-based booth built with HTML5 and Node.js. Its documented features include a live camera preview, custom photo borders, Chromium kiosk mode, and a Wi-Fi access point so guests can reach booth functions from another computer. The installation steps are historical: check the project’s repository for current compatibility before running them.

What this Raspberry Pi PhotoBooth does

The project presents a web page as the booth interface: a USB webcam supplies the camera, the Pi can display the page in Chromium kiosk mode, and users can add decorative borders to photos. The instructions also describe connecting another computer to the PhotoBooth Wi-Fi network to reach the booth page and a page for viewing, printing, or deleting photos. See the Hackaday project instructions and the linked raymondljones/photobooth source repository.

What you need

  • A Raspberry Pi. The project does not identify a required generation or publish a tested model list.
  • A USB-connected webcam. The instructions do not name a required webcam model.
  • A display if you want the booth interface on the Pi; the page describes use with or without a touchscreen.
  • Network access for the documented Wi-Fi access-point arrangement and for visiting booth pages from another computer.

The project does not specify a printer model or establish printer compatibility. Although its photo page includes print access, verify that a printer works with this software before choosing one.

Check compatibility before installation

The Hackaday instructions describe a quick installer that installs Node.js, PHP, Chromium, and other dependencies, configures Chromium kiosk mode and a Wi-Fi access point, and reboots the Pi. They also describe a manual installation route in the repository. These are historical directions, not a current supported OS or hardware matrix. Review the repository’s current instructions and source before proceeding; do not assume the quick installer still works on a present-day Pi OS release.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

In particular, do not apply requirements from similarly named photobooth software to this project. PhotoboothProject documents Node.js 20.15.0 or newer and npm 10.7.0 or newer for its separate application, along with Apache or NGINX installation options and optional CUPS printing. Its setup wizard is also for that separate software, not Raymond Lewis Jones’s HTML5/Node.js booth: PhotoboothProject Debian installation documentation and PhotoboothProject Setup Wizard.

Follow the documented quick-install flow

  1. Download and unzip the project using the instructions on the Hackaday project page.
  2. Only if the repository’s current guidance confirms this installer is appropriate for your system, run sh quick-install.sh as root. The historical instructions say the script installs dependencies, configures kiosk mode and a Wi-Fi access point, then reboots the Pi.
  3. On first launch, allow Chromium to access the camera when prompted. The project instructions say camera permission is initially required.
  4. Connect a separate computer to the PhotoBooth network to open the booth page and the photo-management page, as described by the project.

If the installer fails or the expected network or kiosk behavior does not appear, stop rather than substituting package versions or commands from another photobooth project. Check the repository’s current installation notes for a supported path.

Add custom photo borders

The project’s instructions place border customization in /var/www/html/booth.html. Add a list item for each border image and give each item a unique data-option value so the options remain distinct. Use the project’s supplied border images as a size reference; the instructions do not establish a universal image dimension. The detailed guidance is under “To add you own borders” on the project instructions page.

Keep similar Raspberry Pi booth projects separate

The Raspberry Pi Foundation’s All-Seeing Pi is a different educational build, not another name or installation path for this HTML5/Node.js application. Its listed setup includes a Camera Module, a monitor (the documented build used a touchscreen), two tactile buttons, a breadboard, and male-female jumper leads, and it uses Python with educational worksheets. Laura Sach, a resource creator for that project, said, “I think it would be a brilliant project to do as a team!” That comment refers to the Foundation’s teaching project, not this application.
