Perishable lunchbox food should stay at room temperature for no more than 2 hours. If it is exposed to temperatures above 90°F (32°C)—such as in a hot car—the limit is 1 hour. After the applicable limit, discard it; don’t taste it to check whether it is safe.
How long can lunch sit out?
FoodSafety.gov’s general guidance sets a two-hour limit for perishable food left unrefrigerated at ordinary room temperature. When the surrounding temperature is above 90°F (32°C), use the shorter one-hour limit. These are limits for food left without refrigeration, not a promise that every packed lunch stays safe for that long. FoodSafety.gov’s time-and-temperature guidance explains that bacteria multiply quickest in the 40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C) danger zone; keep a refrigerator at 40°F (4°C) or below.
If you don’t know how long the food has been out or how warm it became, don’t use smell, appearance, or a taste test to decide. FoodSafety.gov advises discarding food that has exceeded the applicable time limit and says never to taste food to determine its safety. Does an insulated lunch bag keep food safe until lunchtime?
An insulated carrier helps with safe transport when packed with cold sources, but the cited federal guidance does not give a universal number of safe hours for a lunchbox or certify a particular bag-and-ice-pack combination for a specific duration. Treat it as a way to keep food cold, not as proof that food stayed at a safe temperature.

For a school or work lunch, follow FoodSafety.gov’s advice to use an insulated lunchbox or soft-sided insulated bag and pack perishable food with two cold sources. Examples include a frozen gel pack and a frozen water bottle or juice box. On arrival, put the lunch in a refrigerator or cooler if one is available. FoodSafety.gov’s events and seasons guidance recommends two cold sources and prompt cold storage when available; its safe-lunch packing advice also describes a soft-sided insulated bag with frozen items.
What to do in hot weather or a hot car
If the lunch is exposed to temperatures above 90°F (32°C), apply the one-hour limit. A hot car is a clear example in FoodSafety.gov’s guidance. If perishable food has been out longer than that, discard it rather than relying on an insulated bag, cold pack, smell, or taste to establish safety.
