Buy Raspberry Pi Camera Module 3 if your project needs autofocus for changing subject distances, HDR for high-contrast scenes, a choice of wide framing, or infrared-sensitive NoIR capture. If you do not need a camera or those features, the official specifications do not establish a reason to choose this module over another option. First check your Raspberry Pi’s camera connector and the cable you will need.
What Camera Module 3 offers
Raspberry Pi Camera Module 3 is a compact CSI-2 camera built around a Sony IMX708 back-illuminated, stacked CMOS sensor. Raspberry Pi specifies 11.9 megapixels and a maximum resolution of 4608 × 2592 pixels. Its main reasons to consider it are phase-detection autofocus, HDR, and four variants that combine two field-of-view choices with two infrared-filter configurations. Raspberry Pi’s product page lists the current specifications.
Autofocus for changing distances
Powered phase-detection autofocus is useful when the camera or subject moves, or when a project must capture objects at different distances without manually resetting focus. Raspberry Pi says the module can focus from about 5 cm to infinity; actual behavior depends on the camera software and configuration. A fixed-focus arrangement may be adequate when the camera and subject remain at stable distances.
HDR for bright and dark areas in one scene
HDR combines multiple simultaneous exposures to retain detail across bright and shadowed parts of a scene. It can help with a doorway facing daylight, for example, where a single exposure may struggle to show both the interior and the bright outdoors. The trade-off is lower still-image resolution: Raspberry Pi’s still-capture guide lists a maximum of 2304 × 1296 for HDR stills, compared with 4608 × 2592 for non-HDR stills. Which Camera Module 3 variant should you choose?
The model names describe two separate choices: field of view and infrared filtering. Standard and Wide variants differ in framing; standard and NoIR variants differ in whether an infrared-cut filter is fitted.

Without the IR-cut filter, a NoIR model can capture infrared when paired with suitable IR lighting. It is not, by itself, a night-vision system: a dark scene still needs illumination. Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation explains the variants and their infrared behavior.

Check board and cable compatibility before buying
Camera Module 3 connects through a CSI camera connector, so confirm that your exact Raspberry Pi board has one. Raspberry Pi identifies the Raspberry Pi 400 and the 2016 launch version of the Zero as lacking a camera connector. Zero generations and connectors vary: the product page says all Zero models require a Zero camera cable because the standard supplied cable does not fit the smaller connector, while the product brief notes that early Zero boards without the required FPC connector are excluded and later compatible models need a separately sold adapter FPC. Check the board generation and connector before ordering a cable or module. Raspberry Pi’s product page and its camera documentation provide compatibility context.
Use the modern Raspberry Pi camera software
Camera Module 3 is supported by libcamera and the libcamera-based Picamera2, not Raspberry Pi’s legacy closed-source camera stack. Raspberry Pi’s 9 January 2023 launch article also noted that autofocus support arrived in updated software, so use current camera documentation rather than relying on old setup commands. Account for resolution, video modes, and physical clearance
Raspberry Pi’s product page lists common video modes including 1080p50 and 720p120; the product brief lists 1080p50, 720p100, and 480p120. These are source-listed modes, not a promise that every mode is available in every capture configuration. Consult the current software documentation for the mode and setup your project requires.
The product page gives standard-variant dimensions of 25 × 24 × 11.5 mm and a height of 12.4 mm for Wide variants. If the camera must fit inside a case or near another component, check clearance for the chosen variant rather than assuming all versions have the same height. Raspberry Pi says production is planned until at least January 2030; this manufacturer commitment is useful for long-lived projects but does not guarantee local stock.

When Camera Module 3 is not the right purchase
- You do not need camera input: the feature list alone is not a reason to add a camera to a project.
- Your scene does not need autofocus or HDR: if focus stays fixed and lighting has no challenging bright-dark range, those features may not add value.
- Your board lacks a compatible CSI connector: verify the exact board and any required Zero cable or adapter before buying.
- Your enclosure cannot accommodate the selected module: account for the Wide variant’s stated height as well as mounting and cable clearance.
- Your software depends on the legacy camera stack: Camera Module 3 requires the modern libcamera-based environment.
