It powers both Starship’s upper stage and the Super Heavy booster: turbopumps force propellants into the engine at high pressure, combustion gases drive the pumps, and the propellants burn in a main chamber to produce thrust.
How staged combustion produces thrust
A rocket engine must feed its combustion chamber with propellant at high pressure and flow. Raptor does this with turbopumps. In a staged-combustion engine, some propellant burns in preburners first; the resulting hot gas spins turbines connected to the pumps. The propellants then flow into the main combustion chamber, where they burn and produce high-pressure exhaust. The nozzle accelerates that exhaust to generate thrust.
NASA’s general explanation of full-flow staged combustion describes a fuel-rich preburner driving the fuel turbopump and an oxygen-rich preburner driving the oxygen turbopump. The resulting gases and remaining propellant continue to the main chamber. NASA explains that routing all propellant flow through preburners can supply more turbine-driving mass flow than a conventional staged-combustion arrangement, while lower turbine temperatures can reduce turbine stress. These are general cycle principles, not a complete published schematic of Raptor’s internal plumbing or evidence of a particular service life. NASA’s overview of rocket engine cycles explains the broader architecture.
SpaceX identifies Raptor as a staged-combustion engine, but its public vehicle description does not provide a full, current internal flow diagram. The preburner explanation above describes full-flow staged combustion in general; it should not be mistaken for a verified, Raptor-specific sequence of every internal flow path.

What Raptor burns and where it flies
Raptor burns liquid methane (CH₄) and liquid oxygen (LOX). SpaceX’s Starship vehicle description lists three sea-level Raptors and three Raptor Vacuum engines on the upper stage, and 33 Raptors on Super Heavy. The vacuum-optimized engines are designed for use in space. These counts describe SpaceX’s published configuration and can change as the vehicle is revised. SpaceX’s Starship page provides its current vehicle description.
Sea-level and vacuum variants
Different flight environments call for different engine configurations. The sea-level variant is used where the atmosphere is present, including Super Heavy’s launch role; the upper stage also uses sea-level engines alongside vacuum-optimized Raptors. SpaceX describes the Raptor Vacuum version as designed for space. Its published vehicle page gives the stage-specific engine counts, rather than a full technical explanation of the differences in nozzle geometry.

What SpaceX publishes about Raptor 3
In a May 2025 update, SpaceX reported Raptor 3 sea-level thrust of 250 metric-ton-force (551,000 lbf), vacuum thrust of 275 metric-ton-force (606,000 lbf), and a sea-level engine mass of 1,525 kg. These are SpaceX figures for the named Raptor 3 variants, not specifications for every Raptor generation or a guarantee that future configurations will retain them. SpaceX’s updates page is the source for the dated figures.
The same update describes Raptor 3 design changes including integrated sensors and controllers, thermal protection, removal of individual engine shrouds, a redesigned ignition system, and mass savings at the vehicle level. SpaceX’s description concerns its engine and vehicle design; it does not, by itself, establish a comparative reliability or operational-life claim.

What a flight report reveals—and what it does not
SpaceX’s September 28, 2026 account of Flight 14 says Super Heavy ignited all 33 Raptor 3 engines at launch and that Starship’s upper stage ignited its six engines after hot staging. It also describes later engine operations on both vehicles. This documents the engines’ part in the flight sequence, but it does not disclose a complete Raptor startup procedure, such as detailed valve timing. SpaceX’s launch updates provide the flight account.
A launch report is SpaceX’s description of a vehicle event, not an independent certification or controlled comparison with other engines. It is useful for understanding when the engines operate in a flight, but not for inferring unpublished design details.

How to read Raptor specifications
Engine figures are meaningful only when tied to a particular variant and date. Raptor 3’s 2025 thrust and mass figures should not be generalized to earlier engine versions, nor should vehicle engine counts be treated as permanent: SpaceX continues to revise both the engine and Starship configuration.
When comparing Raptor with another engine, compare the propellants, combustion cycle, pump and preburner arrangement, intended sea-level or vacuum role, and figures for a clearly named version. Also distinguish manufacturer-published specifications from test results or independently reviewed measurements. The figures cited here are manufacturer-published values, not a cross-engine comparison.
