To clone a GitHub repository in Visual Studio, choose Git > Clone Repository, select the repository from the GitHub list or enter its URL, choose a local folder, and select Clone. Sign in to the GitHub account that can access the repository if prompted; afterward, load a detected solution or work in Folder View.

Clone a GitHub repository in Visual Studio

  1. Open the clone dialog. In Visual Studio, choose Git > Clone Repository. In some fresh Git contexts, the menu may display Clone instead. If Git is missing from the menu, check Tools > Options > Source Control > Plug-in Selection and select Git; labels and settings can vary by version. Microsoft documents this workflow in Clone a repo in Visual Studio.
  2. Find the repository. In the clone window, browse repositories available through GitHub, or enter the repository URL directly. Browsing is convenient when the repository appears under the signed-in account; direct entry is useful when it does not appear in the list.
  3. Authenticate when prompted. In the Open from GitHub window, sign in or confirm the account Visual Studio should use. On first authorization, follow the authorization notice and confirmation flow.
  4. Choose the local destination and clone. Select the local folder where the repository should be stored, then select Clone. Cloning retrieves the repository onto your machine; your later Git changes remain local until you push them to a remote.
  5. Open the content. When the clone finishes, choose a detected solution to load, or use Folder View in Solution Explorer if you want to browse the repository without loading a solution. Visual Studio detects the clone and adds it to Local Repositories for later access. The Git menu can also configure automatic solution loading when a repository opens.

Choose how to locate and open the repository

Decision Option When it helps
Repository discovery Browse the GitHub list Use this when the repository is available to the account currently connected to Visual Studio.
Repository discovery Enter the repository URL Use this when you already have the location or the repository is absent from the picker.
After cloning Load a detected solution Use this when you want Visual Studio to open the repository’s solution.
After cloning Folder View Use this to browse files in Solution Explorer without opening a solution.

Fix a missing repository or clone command

The repository is not in the GitHub picker

  • Check which GitHub account is active and whether that account has access to the repository.
  • Try entering the repository location directly in the clone window.
  • If you use multiple identities, switch the active account from the Visual Studio profile card or File > Account Settings.

The Clone Repository command is missing

Check Tools > Options > Source Control > Plug-in Selection and make sure Git is selected. The precise path or wording may differ in your installed Visual Studio version.

An enterprise account is unavailable

Public GitHub is enabled by default. To use a GitHub Enterprise Cloud or Server identity, enable enterprise accounts in Tools > Options > Accounts, then add the account. Enterprise Managed User sign-in has a separate route. Microsoft’s account guidance, including version-specific details, is in Add your GitHub accounts to your Visual Studio keychain.

Sign-in fails or repeats

Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance includes checking browser localhost HSTS policies and whether Visual Studio is running under a different Windows account. These are specific diagnostics, not general fixes; investigate them if ordinary account and access checks do not resolve the sign-in problem. See Microsoft’s GitHub account guidance.

GitHub is optimized, but not the only Git option

Visual Studio’s Git interface supports GitHub, Azure DevOps, other Git providers, and local-only repositories. Microsoft describes GitHub as the provider for which the Visual Studio Git experience is optimized, not as a requirement for using Git. See About Git in Visual Studio. If you need a repository with no hosted remote, you can use local Git instead; Microsoft’s guide to creating one is Create a Git repository in Visual Studio.

Account and version details

GitHub sign-in is part of Visual Studio account management. Microsoft says GitHub accounts can be added at first launch beginning with Visual Studio 17.13; multiple accounts are supported, and the first account added becomes active. You can manage accounts from the profile card or File > Account Settings. Because authentication features and menu labels are version-sensitive, check the documentation for your installed Visual Studio release if the steps do not match your screen.
