For a Windows PC used with Google apps, the most useful settings are practical workflow choices—not a guaranteed speed boost. Set Chrome as the default browser, choose how it starts and handles accounts, configure Google Drive for desktop for your storage and offline needs, and tune notifications in both Windows and Chrome. The instructions below focus on Windows 11; menu labels can change, and work or school administrators may manage some settings.
Make Chrome the default browser for web links
Setting Chrome as Windows’ default browser routes supported web links to Chrome. It does not change the search engine used inside Chrome; that is a separate browser setting.
- Open Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Search for and select Google Chrome.
- Select Set default.
- If a particular link still opens in another browser, review the listed file and link types on Chrome’s default-app page.
Google’s instructions for Windows 10 use Settings > System > Default apps or Settings > Apps > Default apps, depending on the version, then Chrome under Web browser (Google Chrome Help). However, Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025 (Microsoft Support).
Choose Chrome’s startup behavior and keep accounts organized
In Chrome, open More > Settings > On startup. You can start with a new tab, continue where you left off, or open a selected set of pages. Reopening the previous session restores its tabs and logged-in sites; a new tab gives you a cleaner start. The startup page appears when Chrome launches, while the homepage opens when you select the Home control (Google Chrome Help).

For work and personal Google accounts, use separate Chrome profiles to reduce account mix-ups. Profiles do not override an organization’s account or security policies. Signing in to Chrome enables syncing preferences; Google recommends syncing only on devices you own. On a public computer, use Guest mode instead (Google Chrome Help).
Set Drive for desktop to fit your storage and access needs
Decide whether Drive should launch when you sign in
Google Drive for desktop can start when you log in to your computer. To change this, open Drive for desktop, select Settings > Preferences > Advanced Settings, and adjust the launch-at-login option. Leave it enabled if you use Drive regularly; turn it off if you prefer to start Drive only when needed. Google notes that it opens by default after computer login, and work or school administrators may manage or restrict settings (Google Drive Help).

Choose streaming or mirroring
In Drive for desktop preferences, choose the file-storage option that matches how you work. Streaming uses very little local computer disk space, while mirroring downloads a full copy to the computer. Google Account storage and local disk space are separate considerations.

Adjust other Drive controls only for a clear reason
Drive for desktop also offers proxy settings, upload and download rate limits measured in kilobytes per second, a configurable search hotkey, and prompts to back up detachable devices. Lower bandwidth limits can make syncing take longer; Google does not specify a universally ideal limit. Keep important Drive sync-error notifications enabled if you rely on desktop syncing (Google Drive Help).
Control notifications in Windows and Chrome
Notifications have two relevant layers: Windows controls app-level alerts, while Chrome controls website notification permissions. Check both if Gmail or Calendar alerts are missing or too frequent.

Adjust Windows notification behavior
- Open Settings > System > Notifications.
- Select an app to control whether it can send notifications, show banners, and how it behaves during Do Not Disturb.
- Review Do Not Disturb and priority settings if you want to silence banners but retain notifications in the notification center or let selected apps through.
Windows Focus can turn on Do Not Disturb during a focus session and hide taskbar badges and flashing. Microsoft describes this behavior for Windows 11 and Windows 10 (Microsoft Support).
Review Chrome’s website notification permissions
In Chrome, open Settings > Privacy and security > Site Settings > Notifications. You can block individual sites or use quieter notification prompts. If a web notification does not appear, check whether the site is permitted in Chrome and whether Windows is suppressing the app’s notifications (Google Chrome Help).

What these settings can—and cannot—improve
These choices can make links, account switching, file access, sync behavior, and alerts more predictable for a Google-centered workflow. The official setup guidance does not establish a general measurable speed or productivity gain, so treat these as configuration improvements rather than performance tuning.
