Eligible startups may receive up to 20 GitHub Enterprise Cloud licenses for one year through Microsoft for Startups—but this is a limited program benefit, not free GitHub Enterprise for every startup. The benefit is available to qualifying companies backed by an investor, accelerator, incubator, or university in the Microsoft for Startups Investor Network, and the offer must appear in the company’s Azure Portal benefits page.
What the Microsoft GitHub offer includes
Microsoft’s GitHub Enterprise benefit guide says the offer includes up to 20 GitHub Enterprise Cloud licenses for one year, once per startup. It provides core Enterprise capabilities such as centralized administration, security and policy controls, repositories, issues, pull requests, GitHub Actions, and Packages.
The benefit is not necessarily provisioned automatically. The company must find it in the Microsoft for Startups Benefits page in Azure Portal and redeem it. Having an Azure subscription is not required.
Who can qualify
The specific GitHub benefit is intended for startups backed by a VC, accelerator, incubator, or university in the Microsoft for Startups Investor Network. Microsoft also says applicants must meet the general Microsoft for Startups requirements, and the GitHub benefit must be visible in the company’s portal. Investor Network backing alone does not guarantee that the offer will appear.

Microsoft’s general eligibility overview lists these program criteria:
- The company is privately held and for-profit, and is developing a software-based product or service.
- Its headquarters are in a country where Azure services are available.
- It has received no more than $350,000 in lifetime free Azure credits.
- It has not reached Series C funding or later.
Microsoft says applications are typically reviewed within three business days. That is a typical review timeframe for the general program, not a promise that every application or GitHub benefit will be approved on that schedule.

How to claim the benefit
- Sign in to the Azure Portal and open the Microsoft for Startups Benefits page. Confirm that the GitHub Enterprise benefit is listed for your startup.
- Open the benefit and copy its redemption code.
- Go to github.com/redeem and redeem the code.
- Create a new GitHub Enterprise account as part of redemption. The Microsoft coupon cannot be applied to an existing GitHub Enterprise account.
- Add a valid credit card or PayPal account to the Enterprise account. Microsoft says a temporary authorization hold may occur.
What is not covered—and what can cost extra
The one-year license benefit does not include every GitHub product or every usage charge. Microsoft lists these items as separately billed:

Azure credits cannot pay for the Enterprise licenses. Microsoft says Azure may be used to pay for metered GitHub add-ons such as Copilot, but those charges are separate from the included license benefit. Review the account’s usage and billing settings so that add-on or Actions charges do not come as a surprise.
What happens when the year ends
When the benefit expires, the Enterprise account can continue as a paid account unless the account owner downgrades or deletes it before expiration. The owner should track the benefit’s end date and decide in advance whether to continue with paid Enterprise billing, move to another plan, or delete the account. Any separately billed metered usage may also create charges while the account is active.

How this differs from GitHub’s own startup credits
GitHub runs a separate GitHub for Startups program. Its published offer is $10,000 in credits for up to 12 months, usable across Enterprise and eligible add-ons. Credits can be exhausted before 12 months, and active products then transition to standard paid billing. This is an account-credit offer, not Microsoft’s 20-license benefit.

Eligibility and billing rules are different, so do not assume that qualifying for one offer qualifies a company for the other. GitHub’s offer is also not a way to combine the Microsoft benefit with another set of Enterprise credits: its terms address prior Microsoft or GitHub startup credits. Check each program’s current terms before applying.
