NoClassDefFoundError is a LinkageError raised when the JVM or a class loader needs a class definition during normal loading or use and cannot provide it. One can appear as the cause of the other, so the full exception chain matters.
How the two errors differ
| Point | ClassNotFoundException |
NoClassDefFoundError |
|---|---|---|
| Java type | An Exception via ReflectiveOperationException. |
An Error via LinkageError. |
| Typical trigger | Code explicitly requests a class by string name, such as through Class.forName or ClassLoader.loadClass, and no definition is found. |
The JVM or a class loader needs a class definition during ordinary loading or use, such as a method call or object creation, and cannot find it. |
| First checks | The requested binary name, the loading API, and which class loader handled the request. | Whether the runtime has the required class and its dependencies, and whether the class path, module path, or loader setup makes them visible. |
| Relationship | Can be the underlying cause of a NoClassDefFoundError. |
Can report a loading failure whose cause is a ClassNotFoundException. |
Oracle’s Java SE 26 API documentation associates ClassNotFoundException with named loading methods. Its documentation for NoClassDefFoundError describes a missing definition needed by the JVM or a loader during normal use.
Why a NoClassDefFoundError can say ClassNotFoundException
The two names are not contradictory. During class creation or resolution, the JVM may ask a loader to find a class. If the loader cannot find a definition, the lookup can fail with ClassNotFoundException; the broader class-loading process can then fail with NoClassDefFoundError, retaining the lookup exception as its cause. The Java SE 26 JVM Specification, section 5.3, describes this cause relationship.
Read the entire stack trace, including every Caused by line. The outer error identifies the failure surfaced during ordinary loading or use; the nested cause can show the unsuccessful lookup that led to it.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to diagnose the failure
- Capture the full exception chain. Include the first error, all
Caused bylines, and the stack frames. A nestedClassNotFoundExceptionmay identify the failed lookup beneath an outerNoClassDefFoundError. - Check the exact binary class name. Compare the requested name with the class’s package and spelling, including capitalization. Check whether shading or relocation changed the name, and whether it uses the format expected by the loading API.
- Identify how the class is being loaded. Look for explicit calls such as
Class.forNameorClassLoader.loadClass, ordinary references to the class, or a framework or plugin’s custom loader. In Java SE 26, the defaultClassLoader.loadClassbehavior checks already-loaded classes, delegates to the parent, then callsfindClass; a custom loader can change that behavior. See Oracle’s ClassLoader documentation. - Compare build-time and runtime artifacts. Verify that the class and its transitive dependencies are present in the artifacts actually deployed, not just in a development environment. Confirm they are visible to the loader that needs them.
- Inspect paths and module access. Check class-path and module-path placement and, where relevant, whether the module makes the needed package accessible. The Apache NetBeans troubleshooting guidance also recommends examining stack traces, visibility, and module exports.
- Investigate initialization failures separately. If the trace points to a class initializer or a previous failed initialization, follow that specific cause rather than assuming the top-level application class is absent. The error name alone does not establish one particular packaging problem.
Use the exception type to orient, not to guess
The type and context help classify the failure, but neither name alone proves its root cause. For ClassNotFoundException, begin with the requested name and the loader responsible for the explicit lookup. For NoClassDefFoundError, determine which definition was needed at runtime and whether its dependencies and loader visibility match the deployed setup. Then follow the cause chain to the first actionable failure.
