Yes—but this was Microsoft’s explanation of a problem it observed in the New Bing preview in February 2023, not a verified rule for today’s Bing or Copilot. Microsoft said very long sessions could leave Bing’s underlying chat model producing less accurate answers or a tone the company did not intend. It responded by limiting session length, then quickly raised those preview limits.

What Microsoft said about long Bing chats

In a February 17, 2023 update, Microsoft wrote that “very long chat sessions can confuse the underlying chat model in the new Bing.” The statement referred to New Bing, then in preview. Four days later, Microsoft elaborated that long sessions could lead to Chat answers that were less accurate or had an unintended tone. Those are Microsoft’s descriptions of what it learned; the posts do not provide an independent test showing that conversation length alone caused every such response.

Microsoft described New Bing’s system as combining its search index, ranking and results with GPT reasoning capabilities. It said Bing Orchestrator generated internal queries and that grounding in Bing supplied fresh information and citations. This is the company’s account of its architecture, not an independently verified explanation of how every answer was produced. See Microsoft’s February 21, 2023 explanation of Building the New Bing.

What the 2023 chat limits meant

Microsoft’s first limits were announced for the New Bing preview on February 17. A “turn” meant one user question and one Bing reply. The company said users would be prompted to start a new topic after five turns and recommended clearing context at the end of a session.

Announcement Per-session limit Daily limit What it meant
February 17, 2023 5 turns 50 turns Preview-era caps; one turn was one question and one Bing reply.
February 21, 2023 6 turns 60 total chats Microsoft announced these higher preview limits. It said it planned to raise the daily cap to 100, but the post described that as a future plan.

The initial figures and definition of a turn appear in Microsoft’s February 17 New Bing chat update. The later change and proposed 100-chat cap appear in the February 21 announcement on increasing chat-session limits. These were announcements about the preview in 2023—not evidence of current limits.

How common were very long sessions?

Microsoft reported that about 1% of chat conversations had 50 or more messages. That was the company’s figure for its own data at the time; it was not an independently audited measurement or a general estimate of how often long chats affect AI systems.

Does this apply to Bing or Copilot now?

Microsoft’s current Copilot transparency note says responses use a prompt and recent conversation history, and may be grounded in web search when appropriate. It also warns that generative models are probabilistic and can make mistakes. The note does not identify a current numeric threshold at which a long conversation causes problems, or connect current Copilot behavior to the 2023 New Bing episode. See Microsoft’s Transparency Note for Microsoft Copilot, accessed October 4, 2026.

So the careful takeaway is limited: Microsoft said unusually long chats could confuse the New Bing preview model in February 2023 and changed the preview’s limits in response. The cited statements do not establish a universal failure point, prove a controlled causal link, or show that the same issue and thresholds apply to today’s products.
