Microsoft plans to update Edge’s built-in PDF reader to improve responsiveness and performance, but it has not published a speed benchmark or confirmed that the change is available to all users. The roadmap lists an August 2026 rollout start and still marks the work “In Development,” so treat the date as an estimate—not proof that the update has shipped to your Edge installation.
What Microsoft is changing
Microsoft 365 roadmap item 516043 describes a migration of the Edge PDF viewer to WebUI2. Microsoft says the work is intended to improve responsiveness, underlying performance, design consistency, and the smoothness of interaction while preserving existing workflows. It describes the visual updates as minor.
This is a planned change to Edge’s PDF-viewer interface and implementation—not a hardware upgrade or a new paid PDF application. Microsoft’s roadmap does not specify a particular Edge version, Stable/Beta/Dev channel, minimum hardware requirement, or rollout percentage.
Will it make PDFs faster on an older PC?
That is Microsoft’s stated goal, but the roadmap does not publish a benchmark, quantified speed improvement, or test results for older or slower computers. It also does not define what qualifies as “older” or “slower.” The available information therefore supports saying that Microsoft intends to improve performance, not promising a specific improvement on your device.

When is the update expected?
The roadmap lists an August 2026 rollout start for Web availability, worldwide standard multi-tenant, and General Availability. The entry was listed as last modified April 9, 2026, and its status remains “In Development.” That date is a planned start, not confirmation of release completion or availability on every Edge channel. The roadmap entry does not identify a build number.
To check whether your installation has the change, open a PDF in Edge and look for the updated viewer after Edge updates. Microsoft’s roadmap does not provide a specific version number or setting that can be used to enable WebUI2 manually.

How the planned change relates to Edge’s existing PDF reader
The WebUI2 migration is separate from the Adobe technology already used by Edge’s built-in PDF reader. Microsoft documentation says the newer built-in reader uses Adobe’s PDF rendering engine and supports Windows and macOS from Edge version 111. Microsoft and Adobe describe the embedded PDF capabilities as available at no cost. That background does not demonstrate a measured performance gain from the planned WebUI2 work, and the roadmap does not say a paid Acrobat plan is required.
