Convergent encryption lets a cloud service recognize identical files without first decrypting them: identical content produces identical encrypted output, so the service can store one copy instead of duplicates. Bitcasa described using this idea for server-side deduplication. It helped explain the company’s “infinite” storage pitch, but it did not make physical storage infinite—and it came with a confidentiality trade-off.

How convergent encryption enables encrypted deduplication

With ordinary randomized encryption, two people encrypting the same file will usually produce different ciphertext because each encryption uses a different random key or nonce. A storage provider comparing those ciphertexts cannot readily tell that the underlying files match.

Convergent encryption changes that relationship. The client derives an encryption key deterministically from the content itself. Identical content therefore yields the same key and, with deterministic encryption, the same ciphertext. The provider can compare the encrypted data—or a deterministic identifier associated with it—and recognize a duplicate without reading the plaintext.

  1. Derive: The client processes the plaintext to derive a key from its content, commonly using a cryptographic hash construction.
  2. Encrypt: It encrypts the data with that key. The same input produces matching encrypted output.
  3. Deduplicate: The provider detects a match and can avoid storing another copy of the payload, while maintaining whatever reference or ownership records its system requires.

The final step is the general deduplication principle, not a description of Bitcasa’s undocumented metadata implementation. The available company explanation does not specify its exact reference-counting design or whether it processed files or smaller blocks.

What Bitcasa said about its encryption

In a September 2011 interview, Bitcasa CEO Tony Gauda said, “We encrypt everything on the client side. We use AES-256 hash, SHA-256 hashing for all the data.” Asked how the service could deduplicate identical uploads while encrypted, he explained: “Well, what happens if you actually derive the key from the data itself? Now we both have the exact same encryption key and we can de-dupe on the server side.” TechCrunch’s interview transcript records the company’s explanation at the time.

That interview is not a full protocol specification or an independent security audit. It does not establish the complete production algorithms, key management, metadata format, or all the service’s security properties. In a 2013 European launch announcement, Bitcasa separately said files were encrypted before leaving a PC; that, too, is a company claim. Bitcasa’s announcement also reported 24 petabytes of user data under management worldwide, a company-reported figure rather than an independently audited measurement.

What “infinite storage” meant—and what it did not

Encryption does not create capacity. Deduplication saves space only when incoming data repeats content already stored. If many customers upload the same file, a deduplicating system may keep one payload rather than a separate full copy for each customer. Unique files still need storage, so the savings depend on how much content repeats.

Bitcasa’s launch-era proposition was that cloud storage could act like an extension of a user’s local drive, with the local disk serving as a cache. The company’s pitch also invoked compression and encryption alongside deduplication. Caching can make remotely held files feel more like local files in normal use, while compression may reduce the stored size of suitable data. Neither guarantees a particular capacity or savings rate. Those outcomes depend on the workload, duplication, compression, infrastructure, service limits and cost. Contemporary reporting on Bitcasa’s product pitch describes the storage and caching concept.

In its 2013 European announcement, Bitcasa said users would “never run out of space.” That was marketing language, not evidence of literal or guaranteed infinite physical capacity. The cited figures do not establish a general deduplication ratio or independently validated storage-savings total for Bitcasa.

The security trade-off: matching can reveal equality

Content-derived keys make deduplication possible, but they also create information leakage. If an attacker can guess a candidate file, the attacker may derive its deterministic encryption value and check whether it matches a stored object. This can confirm that a predictable or publicly available file is present, even if the attacker cannot simply read the encrypted data. Matching ciphertext also reveals that two stored objects have identical underlying content.

Cryptographic researchers describe convergent encryption within the broader family of message-locked encryption and identify exposure to brute-force guessing when files come from a known or guessable set. Their DupLESS paper, presented at USENIX Security in 2013, proposes a different approach: clients obtain message-based keys through a key server using an oblivious pseudorandom function protocol. The key server adds a secret-dependent barrier that makes guessing harder while retaining deduplication. This is a separate research design; it does not show that Bitcasa implemented DupLESS. Technical discussion of deterministic encryption and deduplication leakage is also available in the Financial Cryptography and Data Security 2014 proceedings.

When deduplication saves space

  • Repeated content: Identical data already in the system can be represented by a single stored payload, subject to the service’s metadata and ownership handling.
  • Unique content: A file with no matching stored copy still needs its own storage; deduplication alone gives no space saving for it.
  • Guessable content: Predictable files are more exposed to confirmation or brute-force testing under basic content-derived key schemes.
  • Independently randomized encryption: It offers a different confidentiality profile, but separate ciphertexts for identical data frustrate straightforward deduplication.
