Start by hiding only what is pulling your attention away. In Visual Studio Code (VS Code), you can turn off the minimap, tuck away the Side Bar or Panel, and keep navigation aids such as breadcrumbs or Sticky Scroll visible. For a temporary, cleaner workspace, use Zen Mode. These settings are reversible; whether they help you work faster depends on your workflow, not a documented speed guarantee.
Which changes should you try first?
Make the smallest change that addresses a real distraction, then use the editor for your usual work before changing anything else. A full-screen focus mode is not necessary if one overview strip or open panel is the actual problem.
- Minimap: Turn it off if the code overview strip on the editor’s right edge keeps drawing your eye.
- Side Bar and Panel: Hide either one when you do not need its file list, terminal, or other contents in view.
- Breadcrumbs or Sticky Scroll: Keep these on if they help you stay oriented in a file or understand nested code.
- Zen Mode: Use it for a temporary focus reset when you want to hide more of the surrounding interface.
Change one or two things at a time. Keep a setting only if the calmer layout helps without making information you need harder to reach.
How to adjust the VS Code layout
Turn off the minimap without hiding other controls
The minimap is the narrow code overview beside the editor. To disable it, add this to your VS Code settings:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →{"editor.minimap.enabled": false}
The VS Code user interface documentation also describes moving the minimap to the left, if its position rather than its presence is the distraction.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Hide the Side Bar or Panel when needed
Use Ctrl+B on Windows or Linux, or ⌘B on macOS, to toggle the Side Bar. Use Ctrl+J or ⌘J to toggle the Panel. These shortcuts let you reclaim space without switching to a full focus mode. The documented shortcuts are listed in VS Code tips and tricks.
Toggle Zen Mode for a temporary reset
Open the Command Palette and run the Zen Mode command, or use Ctrl+K Z on Windows or Linux and ⌘K Z on macOS. Press Escape twice to exit. Custom keybindings may change the shortcut. Microsoft describes Zen Mode as hiding UI elements other than the editor, switching VS Code to full screen, and centering the editor; see the interface documentation and tips and tricks.

Keep the navigation aids that prevent disorientation
Breadcrumbs show where you are
Breadcrumbs display the file path and, when language support provides symbols, the symbol path to the cursor. They can preserve useful context when other interface elements are hidden. If they add clutter for a particular task, use the Command Palette, Go to Symbol, or Outline navigation instead. VS Code documents these layout and navigation features in its user interface guide and tips and tricks.
Sticky Scroll keeps code scope in view
Sticky Scroll keeps nested symbol scopes visible at the top of the editor as you scroll through a file. It can help with long or deeply nested code; turn it off if the extra lines feel distracting. VS Code includes it among its editor layout features in the user interface documentation.
Keep a route to errors and warnings
A cleaner screen should not mean losing access to useful feedback. Rather than disabling diagnostics wholesale, open the Problems list when you need it and filter by type or matching text to focus on relevant errors and warnings. The VS Code tips and tricks page describes the Problems list and its filters.

Choose where the settings should apply
Use user settings for personal preferences you want across VS Code instances. Use workspace settings when a choice belongs to a project or should be shared with its collaborators. Workspace settings live in the project’s .vscode/settings.json and can be version-controlled. See VS Code settings documentation.
How to tell whether a cleaner layout works for you
Compare configurations during normal coding rather than assuming that less interface means faster work. Consider how much UI disappears, whether you can still see file and symbol context, how quickly you can reach errors and warnings, and how easily you can restore hidden controls. The official documentation describes what these features do, but does not establish a measurable improvement in coding speed or productivity.

Other editors use different focus controls
Focus-oriented modes are not unique to VS Code, but their labels and behavior differ. IntelliJ IDEA describes Zen mode as combining Full Screen and Distraction-free modes so the editor occupies the main window; see IntelliJ IDEA Zen mode documentation. Visual Studio supports Sticky Scroll in Visual Studio 2022 version 17.5 and later, with options for which outer or inner scopes remain visible; see Visual Studio Sticky Scroll documentation. Follow the controls for your editor rather than assuming they match VS Code.
