Use your editor’s built-in sync when it covers the settings and extensions you need: Visual Studio Code, JetBrains IDEs, and Visual Studio can sync selected data through an account. Sublime Text’s official settings documentation describes editable configuration files rather than a built-in cloud-sync workflow. The exact data that moves—and how conflicts, plugins, and different operating systems are handled—varies by editor.
Compare what each editor syncs
| Editor | How sync works | Settings and extensions | Scope and important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visual Studio Code | Sign in with a Microsoft or GitHub account and use Backup and Sync Settings… | Selectable categories include settings, keyboard shortcuts, snippets, user tasks, UI state, extensions and their global enablement, profiles, MCP server configurations, and user-level prompts and instructions. | Workspace tasks are excluded. Extensions do not sync to or from remote SSH, development-container, or WSL windows. Keyboard shortcuts are separated by operating system by default. |
| JetBrains IDEs | Sign in to a JetBrains Account and configure Backup and Sync. | Selected settings can include themes, keymaps, color schemes, editor and code-completion settings, live templates, code styles, and enabled/disabled plugin state. | Choose whether to share among instances of one IDE or across JetBrains IDE products. Plugin installation behavior depends on whether the plugin is enabled or disabled. |
| Visual Studio | Sign in on each computer using the same personalization account and select settings to sync. | Selected categories include development settings, command aliases, window layouts, themes, fonts and colors, shortcuts, text-editor settings, and XAML Designer options. | Behavior depends on Visual Studio version. Visual Studio 2026 receives settings from a Visual Studio 2022 profile, but changes do not sync back to Visual Studio 2022. |
| Sublime Text | Configure user or project settings in files; use a separate file-sync or version-control workflow if appropriate. | User preferences are normally in Packages/User/Preferences.sublime-settings. The cited official page does not document a native sync service for settings and packages. |
Project settings can store editor settings. A manual workflow requires care with machine-specific values and simultaneous edits. |
Sync settings and extensions in Visual Studio Code
- Open the Manage gear menu or the Accounts menu and select Backup and Sync Settings….
- Choose the data categories to sync, then sign in with a Microsoft or GitHub account. VS Code merges local and cloud data after sign-in and continues syncing in the background. Microsoft’s Settings Sync documentation lists the current categories and behavior.
- On the other computer, sign in with the same account and enable sync. Select the same relevant categories if prompted.
Settings Sync can include user settings, user-defined keyboard shortcuts, snippets, user-level tasks, MCP servers, UI state, extensions and global enablement, up to 20 profiles, and user-profile prompts and instructions. It excludes workspace tasks. User settings marked machine or machine-overridable, along with explicitly excluded settings, are not synced.
Handle operating systems, remotes, and exclusions
Keyboard shortcuts are kept separate by operating system by default. To use the same shortcuts across operating systems, clear settingsSync.keybindingsPerPlatform. Extensions and their global enablement sync between local VS Code installations, but not to or from remote SSH, development-container, or WSL windows.
Exclude individual settings in the Settings editor or through settingsSync.ignoredSettings. Exclude extensions from the Extensions view or with settingsSync.ignoredExtensions. Stable and Insiders use separate sync services by default; sharing between them can expose version incompatibilities because Insiders may be newer. The service does not support GitHub Enterprise Server or Microsoft Sovereign Cloud accounts, and it has no custom backend.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Resolve conflicts and recover data
If VS Code pauses sync because of a conflict, choose the local version, the remote version, or manually merge the displayed diff. Local backups are deleted after 30 days; the latest 20 remote versions of each data category are retained. Settings, keyboard shortcuts, and user tasks must each be no larger than 100 KB. On desktop, authentication uses the operating system credential store. The optional basic text-encryption setting provides obfuscation, not secure encryption.
Sync JetBrains IDE settings and plugins
- Sign in to your JetBrains Account in the IDE.
- Open Settings → Backup and Sync, enable sync, and choose which categories to share.
- Choose the scope: instances of the same IDE, or all JetBrains IDE products, where supported.
- On the second IDE instance, sign in to the same account and enable sync to retrieve the selected settings.
JetBrains’ IDE settings backup and sync guide says changes made locally sync, as do updates received from another IDE. Plugin state has specific behavior:

- If a plugin is installed on both IDEs, its enabled or disabled state syncs.
- An enabled plugin missing from the other IDE is installed there.
- A disabled plugin missing from the other IDE is not installed.
- Uninstalling a plugin in one IDE disables it in the other rather than uninstalling it there.
For a one-time transfer rather than ongoing sync, export selected settings to a ZIP from one IDE and import selected components into the other.
Sync Visual Studio settings across computers
Sign in on each computer with the same personalization account, then select the settings categories to synchronize. Microsoft lists development settings, command aliases, window layouts, theme and menu casing, fonts and colors, keyboard shortcuts, tabs and windows, startup options, text-editor settings such as code style, and XAML Designer options in its Visual Studio synchronized settings guide.

Version affects the scope of the sync checkbox: starting with Visual Studio 2022 version 17.2, it controls synchronization between installations on the same device as well as across devices. Visual Studio 2026 initially receives settings from a Visual Studio 2022 profile, but settings changed in Visual Studio 2026 do not sync backward to Visual Studio 2022.

Choose the right sync method
- Use built-in account sync when your editor supports the categories you need and you want ongoing updates.
- Check shortcut and machine-specific behavior before relying on a cross-platform setup.
- For JetBrains plugins, account for the distinction between enabling, disabling, and uninstalling a plugin.
- For Sublime Text, treat any shared-file setup as a manual configuration workflow, not an official built-in sync service.
