CodePen Projects can take you from a quick HTML, CSS, or JavaScript experiment to a multi-file front-end project, a shareable example, or a deployed public website. The right use depends on what you’re building: CodePen is designed around browser-based front-end work, not as a general-purpose backend hosting platform.

What can I use CodePen for?

CodePen describes its core workflow simply: “Write HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and get a real-time preview.” That makes it useful when you want to see a visual change as you make it, without first setting up a local development environment. See CodePen Features.

Project goal How CodePen helps
Try a visual idea or interaction Edit HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and view the result in a live preview.
Learn a language feature or library Experiment with preprocessors, Blocks, package search, the preview, and the built-in JavaScript console.
Isolate a bug Reduce a problem to a focused, shareable Pen that others can inspect and reproduce.
Show work or document an example Share public Pens, organize them in Collections, or embed them elsewhere.
Organize a larger front-end build Use the project file system, folders, build Blocks, and version history.
Publish a website Deploy a project to a CodePen URL or connect a domain you own; deployment requires a paid plan.

Can CodePen handle more than a small demo?

Yes. Pens remain suited to small experiments, but CodePen’s project workflow also supports multiple files and folders. Its Blocks can process code, with documented examples such as Babel/JSX and Sass. The built-in console and package search can help during development, while version history provides a way to revisit earlier work. The Pens documentation describes these capabilities.

That broader workflow does not make CodePen a general-purpose application platform. The documented focus is front-end code and its preview or deployment; the available sources do not establish general backend hosting. If a project depends on server-side application logic, evaluate that requirement separately rather than assuming a Pen supplies it.

How can you share or collaborate on a Pen?

Public Pens can be shared by link or embedded in another page. CodePen also supports invited collaborators and real-time editing, which can suit pair work, review, or teaching. A Pen can be forked or used as a template, so someone can make a separate version without changing the original. These options are documented in CodePen’s Pens guide and features page.

Visibility settings and licensing are separate decisions. CodePen says Pens are public by default, and public Pens are MIT licensed. PRO private Pens have no implicit license. Check the current terms and choose the intended visibility and reuse permissions before putting sensitive or proprietary code in a Pen.

How do you turn a project into a website?

CodePen deployment is a PRO feature. A deployed project can be published at a CodePen URL; to use a custom domain, you must own the domain and configure the required DNS records. See CodePen’s deployment and hosting documentation.

Deployment has limits that matter if the site needs to stay available. CodePen documents a 1 TB per month bandwidth limit for each deployed Pen; a site may be undeployed if it exceeds that limit. CodePen also says downgrading or deleting the account undeploys its sites, so plan for what happens to the public site if the account changes.

How should you decide whether a project belongs on CodePen?

  • Choose a Pen for a compact experiment, a learning exercise, a reproducible bug, a component demo, or a front-end example you want to share.
  • Use a multi-file project when folders, build processing, and a more organized front-end codebase are useful; compare your file needs with the current plan limits.
  • Check privacy and licensing first if the code should not be public or if reuse rights matter.
  • Confirm deployment requirements if the result must be a live site, especially when it needs a custom domain or sustained traffic.
  • Plan for assets and ownership by keeping asset hosting within CodePen’s documented use and considering what happens to deployed sites if your account is downgraded or deleted.
