Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo get around a road race or street closure, check the event organizer’s current closure map and the city or transport authority’s notice, then compare affected streets and closure times with your trip. Choose a route or travel mode that avoids restricted areas where practical, allow extra time, and check again before leaving. Follow signs and directions from police, stewards and traffic controllers; a map or navigation app cannot override live restrictions.
Find the current notice for the exact event and date
Start with the organizer’s official page for the event edition you plan to travel during. Look for a course map, road-closure leaflet, or traffic and transport section. Then check the relevant city or transport authority’s notice: it may include restrictions or diversions that are not obvious from the race route alone. Organizers’ materials can change from year to year, so do not rely on a map from a previous edition.
For examples of the kinds of information to look for, the London Marathon Events road-closures page provides area-specific resident information, vehicle crossing information and an event leaflet. The Bank of America Chicago Marathon course page directs readers to its course map and Chicago OEMC event notifications.
Check the streets and time windows that affect your trip
Mark the streets your journey uses, including those near the course, and compare them with the closure periods. Check setup and parking restrictions as well as closures during the race. Also look for official crossing points, neighborhood access rules, bus diversions and named detour routes. A line showing the race course does not necessarily show every affected street or restriction.

City notices can spell out phased closures and diversions. For example, the City of Boston’s 2026 Boston Marathon traffic advisory includes a municipal map and restrictions, while the Hong Kong government’s 2026 Hong Kong Marathon traffic and transport arrangements describes affected route sections, phased closures and diversion examples.
Choose a travel mode before settling on a detour
If driving near the course would mean crossing restrictions or facing likely delays, check whether rail or another public-transit option can get you closer to your destination. Check the transit operator’s event-day notices separately: rail may remain usable even when buses are diverted, but service availability depends on the event and location.

The Copenhagen Marathon traffic page advises drivers to avoid the course where possible, points to metro, S-train and regional trains as alternatives, and notes that buses may be affected. Treat this as guidance for that event, not a rule that applies to every city or race.
If you drive, plan around the full restricted area
Compare workable driving routes against the closure map, including the final approach to your destination and access to parking. Prefer a route that avoids both the course and nearby restricted streets where practical. The Copenhagen Marathon’s advice is direct: “If you must drive on race day please use the course map to view all traffic restrictions on your route.” Its page also recommends allowing extra time. The Chicago Marathon likewise warns that restrictions can change and advises drivers to budget extra time.

There is no universal best detour: compare whether a route crosses an official crossing point, whether its timing fits the closure and expected reopening, what transit diversions apply, and how easily you can reach your destination or parking. These are practical checks, not a published ranking of routes.

Check the latest organizer and authority notices shortly before leaving. Restrictions may be revised, and roads can reopen in stages or remain closed until officials consider traffic safe. Do not assume a road is open because runners have passed, or enter a closed road because a navigation app directs you through it.
- Follow posted signs, barriers and variable message boards.
- Obey instructions from police, stewards and traffic controllers.
- Leave extra time for diversions, queues and changes to access.
The Boston advisory says police and transportation departments may revise arrangements and instructs travelers to follow signs and variable message boards. Chicago’s event guidance similarly calls for compliance with posted signs. Closure rules and available services vary by city and event, so use the current official information for your location, date and mode of travel.
