It flew on ispace’s RESILIENCE lander during Mission 2, but the June 6, 2025 landing attempt failed. ispace could not confirm a successful landing or deployment; the Moonhouse project later said the artwork was at its designated site in Mare Frigoris.
What is the Moonhouse?
Moonhouse is a small red cottage with white trim, made of aluminium and painted with a special space-certified paint. The Associated Press reports that it measures 12 centimetres long, 8 centimetres wide and 10 centimetres tall. It is a model, not a functional lunar shelter.
Genberg conceived the artwork in 1999; the Moonhouse project describes it as realised in 2025. The project frames it around displacement, scale and the idea of home when removed from its familiar setting. Genberg told the AP, “What’s the purpose? It’s art.”
The project says the idea was first imagined at architectural scale, then reduced to a miniature because of the physical limits of transporting an object to the Moon. Its artist statement puts the emphasis on the perspective back on Earth: “It was never about going there. It was about being here.”

How was it meant to reach the lunar surface?
Moonhouse was included in ispace’s Mission 2, which launched from Kennedy Space Center on January 15, 2025. The planned sequence was for the RESILIENCE lander to carry the TENACIOUS micro rover, which would then deliver the artwork to the surface. The project describes the flight and intended delivery as part of the work’s story.
Genberg’s interest in moving familiar dwellings into unfamiliar settings predates this mission. The Moonhouse project connects the lunar work to earlier installations involving a house in an oak tree and on a lake, as well as a foldable house artefact carried aboard the Space Shuttle STS-128 mission to the International Space Station in 2009. The project also identifies an Earth-based aluminium counterpart, project documentation and authorisation as parts of the artwork’s provenance.
Did the tiny house successfully land on the Moon?
ispace’s June 6, 2025 status update says RESILIENCE descended from about 100 kilometres to about 20 kilometres before firing its main engine to slow down. The company then lost telemetry. It received no data indicating a successful landing and concluded the mission. ispace said delays in the laser rangefinder’s valid readings meant the lander could not slow sufficiently; it assessed that a hard landing likely occurred.
That means the planned delivery by TENACIOUS was not confirmed. The Moonhouse project’s later account says communication ceased shortly after touchdown and describes the artwork as situated at the designated site in Mare Frigoris, at 60.44°N, 4.6°W. That is the project’s stated placement; it is distinct from ispace’s report, which did not confirm a successful landing or rover deployment. The available accounts therefore support saying that the mission failed and that the project says the work is at the intended lunar location—not that successful delivery was verified.

Why send a miniature house to the Moon?
The Moonhouse is an artistic gesture rather than a scientific instrument or a practical habitat. A familiar red cottage placed in an unfamiliar, distant landscape makes the idea of “home” feel strange and raises questions of scale: a house that might be large in one setting becomes a tiny object in another. Genberg described the original idea to the AP as “a crazy, maybe idiotic, but at the same time, in my mind, really poetic thought to put a red house with white corners on the surface of the moon.”
The project says about 70 people donated between 7 million and 10 million Swedish kronor toward the project, including its flight, as reported by the AP. That is an attributed donation range, not an audited project budget.
