What did the 2020 report say?
In 2020, Chrome Unboxed reported that a reader found the Twitter PWA installed by default after downloading Twitter from Google Play on a Chromebook. The report did not cite an official statement from Twitter or Google, and it does not show that the behavior applied to every Chromebook or continued in later ChromeOS versions.
What does Google Play install on a Chromebook today?
The available sources do not confirm whether a current Chromebook gets the Android app or a PWA when its user installs X from Google Play. The current Google Play listing identifies the product as X, with X Corp. as its developer, but does not specify what ChromeOS installs.
Google’s documentation explains that PWAs can be distributed through Google Play for ChromeOS, including targeting distribution to ChromeOS devices. That confirms the platform supports this route; it does not identify which version a Chromebook receives for X.

How can a PWA appear as a Chromebook app?
A PWA is a web app that can be installed and presented like an app in ChromeOS. Google says an installed PWA can appear in the ChromeOS launcher and be pinned to the shelf. It must have a valid web app manifest and meet Chrome’s installation criteria.
Google documents both publishing a PWA through Google Play for ChromeOS and installing web apps on a Chromebook. These describe how web apps can be made available and integrated with ChromeOS, not the package currently delivered for X.

How to check what your Chromebook installed
Because the listing does not identify the Chromebook package, check the app on your own device rather than assuming it is a PWA or Android app:
- Open the ChromeOS launcher and locate X.
- Right-click or use the app’s context menu and open its app information or settings, if available. Check whether ChromeOS identifies it as an Android app or a web app.
- If the label is unclear, open the app and inspect its available app information or settings. A Chrome-installed web app is managed as a web app; an Android app is managed through the Android app settings. Exact labels can vary by ChromeOS version.
This device check can identify your installation, but it does not establish a universal rule for all Chromebooks or ChromeOS releases.

What is confirmed—and what remains unknown?
Google’s guidance confirms that ChromeOS can distribute and integrate PWAs. The historical report supplies a single reader-attributed observation about Twitter in 2020. Neither the current X Play listing nor the cited Google documentation confirms that installing X from Google Play on a contemporary Chromebook still installs the PWA by default. An explicit current statement from X or Google, or a verified check on the Chromebook in question, would be needed to settle that point.
