For app development and device testing, start with Google’s Android Studio Emulator. For running Android apps alongside a Linux desktop, consider Waydroid. Genymotion Desktop is another virtual-device tool, while Android-x86 and Bliss OS are Android-based PC or virtual-machine projects—not direct substitutes for desktop-integrated app environments.
The original 2025 list names five options in its available passage, not six. This guide covers those five without presenting an unverified sixth pick as a ranked recommendation. Product and requirements details were checked against official sources on October 4, 2026.
Which Android emulator for Linux should you choose?
“Android emulator” can mean a few different things: a virtual Android device for development, Android running in a container integrated with Linux, or an Android-based operating system booted on a PC or in a virtual machine. Choose by task rather than treating all five options as interchangeable.
| Option | Best fit | How it runs | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android Studio Emulator / AVD | Android app development, device configuration, and testing | Virtual devices managed through Android Studio | Google’s published Linux requirements are substantial. |
| Waydroid | Running Android apps alongside Linux desktop applications | Android system in a Linux container | Wayland, kernel support, and APK architecture affect compatibility. |
| Genymotion Desktop | Developer virtual-device testing across Android versions | Virtual devices; Desktop is available for Linux | Free personal use is limited and lacks technical support; paid licensing unlocks additional features and versions. |
| Android-x86 | Experimenting with Android on an x86 PC or virtual machine | Bootable Android-based OS | The project’s releases page displays Android 9.0 (Pie) as its newest Android-x86 line. |
| Bliss OS | Trying an Android-based PC or VM project | Android-based operating system | Check its current release, hardware compatibility, and support before relying on it. |
Android Virtual Device (AVD) is the name for a configured virtual device used with the Android Emulator; it is not a separate emulator product to count alongside Android Studio’s emulator. The source article names both terms among its options, but they overlap. The original Fossbytes list names the candidates discussed here.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
1. Android Studio Emulator: best for development and testing
For building Android apps or checking behavior across device profiles and Android versions, Google’s Android Studio Emulator is the strongest default. It is Google’s supported development tool, and its virtual devices are designed for development and testing rather than positioned as a consumer gaming solution.
Linux requirements to check first
Google’s published Linux requirements for Android Studio plus the Emulator list a 64-bit Linux distribution supporting GNOME, KDE, or Unity; glibc 2.31 or later; 16 GB RAM; 16 GB of free storage; CPU virtualization; and a GPU with at least 4 GB of VRAM. These are the vendor’s stated requirements, not a guarantee that every compatible system will run every virtual device smoothly. See Google’s Android Studio installation requirements.
Google recommends hardware acceleration for emulator performance when the system supports it. If graphics compatibility is a problem, software rendering is an available alternative, though it may affect performance. Details are in Google’s Android Emulator hardware acceleration guidance and guide to running apps on the Android Emulator.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
When to choose it
- Choose it when you need a supported workflow for developing, debugging, or testing Android apps.
- Check the published RAM, storage, virtualization, graphics, and Linux requirements before installing.
- Do not assume meeting minimum requirements guarantees smooth performance for every virtual device or workload.
2. Waydroid: best for integrating Android apps with a Linux desktop
Waydroid runs a full Android system in a Linux container, using Linux namespaces and hardware access through LXC and binder. Android apps can appear in the Linux application menu, which makes it a different kind of solution from a developer-oriented virtual device. The project describes Waydroid as free and open source; its overview is at Waydroid’s official site.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDesktop and kernel compatibility
Waydroid’s Ubuntu instructions specify a Wayland session on Ubuntu 22.04 and later. Its installation documentation also makes the supported desktop and kernel environment relevant, so verify the instructions for your distribution and session before installing: Waydroid desktop installation instructions.
APK architecture and Google Play
An APK may fail even when Waydroid itself is installed correctly. The project warns that APKs found online are often ARM-only and will not work on x86_64. Check the app’s supported architecture before troubleshooting the container. Waydroid’s application installation guide explains installing and running Android applications.

If you install a GApps image, Google Play may require device self-certification; see Waydroid’s Google Play certification instructions. The project’s licensing information distinguishes public GApps builds intended for individuals from vanilla builds for company use, so do not assume proprietary Google components are unrestricted for commercial use.
When to choose it
- Choose Waydroid when you want Android apps integrated with your Linux desktop and your system meets its session and kernel requirements.
- Check whether the apps you need provide APKs compatible with your CPU architecture.
- Review the project’s Google Play and licensing guidance if Play services or organizational use matters.
3. Genymotion Desktop: a developer-focused alternative
Genymotion Desktop is available for Linux and provides virtual Android devices for development and testing. Its free edition is for personal use, has feature limitations, and does not include technical support. Genymotion’s product page lists Android 5.0 through 15.0 for free use and Android 16.0 for a paid license; confirm the current plan details on Genymotion Desktop and its pricing page. The reviewed pricing information does not establish one universal price to quote.
Desktop is not Genymotion SaaS
Genymotion’s August 13, 2026 support notice says its SaaS service transitioned to ARM64-only Android virtual devices. That change applies to SaaS; it should not be mistaken for a statement that Genymotion Desktop has the same architecture change. The notice is at Genymotion Support.

Check app architecture
Genymotion recommends ARM64 images for compatibility because many modern Android apps are available only for ARM64. Its application deployment guide covers installing apps. The choice of image architecture can matter more than the Android version when a required app will not install or run.
When to choose it
- Consider it if you need developer-oriented virtual devices and want to compare Android versions.
- Use the free edition only if its personal-use scope and feature limits meet your needs.
- Check the specific Desktop plan and image architecture; do not transfer SaaS details to Desktop.
4. Android-x86: an experimental Android-on-PC route
Android-x86 is better understood as an Android-based system for an x86 PC or virtual machine than as a drop-in Linux desktop emulator. The project’s official release page displays Android 9.0 (Pie) as the newest Android-x86 line, followed by Android 8.1 and older branches.
That release-page observation is specific to the Android-x86 project; it does not establish the status of downstream forks or other Android-on-PC projects. Because the newest listed line is based on Android 9.0, treat Android-x86 as a legacy or experimental route, and consider update recency and security before using it for sensitive accounts or everyday tasks.

5. Bliss OS: verify the current project state before choosing
Bliss OS is named in the original candidate list as an Android-based PC option, but the available official-source checks do not establish its current version, pricing, or support status. That is not evidence that the project has no current releases; it means those details should not be assumed from this guide.
Before installing Bliss OS, check the project’s current release information, whether your hardware is supported, and how updates and support are handled. It is a different approach from a container such as Waydroid or a development virtual device such as Android Studio’s Emulator.
How to decide: development, desktop apps, or a bootable system?
- For building or testing Android apps: Start with Android Studio’s Emulator. Consider Genymotion Desktop if its virtual-device features and licensing better fit your workflow.
- For Android apps in a Linux desktop session: Consider Waydroid, after checking Wayland/session, kernel, APK architecture, and Google Play requirements.
- For an Android-based PC or VM experiment: Compare Android-x86 and Bliss OS as operating-system projects, and verify their current release and support details before depending on them.
Across all five, check the intended task, integration style, Linux session and kernel compatibility, CPU architecture, Android version and update cadence, Google Play needs, hardware requirements, and whether free-use limits or paid support matter. No option is an exact substitute for all the others.
