In December 2025, reports showed some Google Discover cards displaying AI-generated titles that differed from the headlines publishers had written. Google described the display as a small UI experiment for a subset of users. Some examples changed the apparent meaning of a story or implied facts it did not report. A separate January 2026 report described AI titles for certain aggregated trending-topic cards—a related feature, but not the same as replacing one publisher’s headline.
What Google Discover changed in the reported experiment
On December 3, 2025, The Verge, PC Gamer and Android Authority reported examples of Discover cards showing titles unlike the headlines on the linked stories. The December reports described an experiment in which Google-generated wording appeared in place of a publisher’s headline on individual story cards.
Google spokesperson Mallory Deleon told The Verge: “These screenshots show a small UI experiment for a subset of Discover users. We are testing a new design that changes the placement of existing headlines to make topic details easier to digest before they explore links from across the web.” This was Google’s stated rationale; it does not establish that the design actually made stories easier to understand.
Examples where the generated title changed the implication
The reports documented specific mismatches, not a representative sample of Discover cards. PC Gamer reported that its article, titled “‘Child labor is unbeatable’: Baldur’s Gate 3 players discover how to build an army of unkillable kids through the power of polymorph and German media laws,” appeared in Discover as “BG3 players exploit children.”

In another example reported by The Verge and Android Authority, an Ars Technica story titled “Valve’s Steam Machine looks like a console, but don’t expect it to be priced like one” appeared as “Steam Machine price revealed.” The source story did not reveal the price. Android Authority also reported that a 9to5Google article about wireless charging appeared as “Qi2 slows down older Pixels.”
These examples show why a short title can matter: it may remove context or suggest a claim the linked article does not make. The available reports do not measure how often this happened or its effects on readers, publishers or traffic.

How to distinguish the later trending-topic cards
On January 23, 2026, Android Authority reported that Google intended to continue AI-generated titles for certain Discover “trending topic” stories. In that treatment, the card groups coverage of a topic from multiple outlets; the generated title describes the grouping rather than replacing the headline of one specific publisher story. This is secondary reporting about Google’s position, not a direct Google product announcement.
Android Authority described cards that may show multiple publisher icons and an “Outlet +X” label. Tapping the generated topic title opens an AI-generated summary, while the image may come from the first outlet shown and may link directly to that outlet’s article. Those interface details are from Android Authority’s report, not official Google help documentation.

| Question | December 2025 individual-story experiment | January 2026 reported trending-topic treatment |
|---|---|---|
| What does the card represent? | One publisher’s story. | A topic grouping coverage from multiple outlets. |
| What does the generated title stand for? | It appeared in place of a publisher-written story headline in reported examples. | It labels the aggregated topic card, rather than one outlet’s specific story. |
| What happens when the title is tapped? | Not established in the December reports cited here. | Android Authority reported that it opens an AI-generated summary. |
| How was AI authorship indicated? | PC Gamer reported that the notice was behind a “See More” control; presentation may vary. | Android Authority described the card interface, but the reporting does not establish a universal authorship label. |
Why the distinction matters to readers
A generated title can be useful as a compact description, but it can also make a reader attribute wording or a claim to a publisher when the publisher did not write it. With an aggregated topic card, the title refers to coverage across outlets, so it should not be read as any one article’s headline or conclusion.
When a Discover title seems surprising, compare it with the linked article’s own headline and opening paragraphs. Check whether the card represents one story or a multi-outlet topic, and whether the wording adds a factual assertion, drops a qualification, or changes the source’s meaning. The December reports said the AI-generated notice was not readily apparent in at least some cases; that observation should not be treated as a rule for every interface or user.

Google called the December treatment a small UI experiment for a subset of Discover users, but the reports provide no audience count, measured error rate or prevalence estimate. The examples establish that some displayed titles differed materially from their linked headlines; they do not show how common those mismatches were. The later report concerns certain trending-topic cards and does not establish that Google rewrites all Discover headlines.
