To stop Google Maps from adding new places and routes to Timeline, open the Maps app and turn Timeline off. This does not erase records already saved, disable Maps’ access to your phone’s location, or stop Location Sharing. Those are separate controls, so use the sections below that match what you want to stop.
Turn off Google Maps Timeline recording
Google now calls its saved map of visits and routes Timeline. Some Google settings and older help pages may still use the term “Location History.” Google says Timeline is off by default for a Google Account and is enabled only if the user opts in. When it is on, precise device location can be saved regularly to the device even when Google apps are not open, according to Google Account Help.
- Open the Google Maps app on your Android phone or iPhone.
- Tap your profile picture or initial, then tap Your Timeline.
- Tap More, then Location and privacy settings.
- Tap Timeline is on, then choose Turn off.
- If Google offers it and you also want to remove activity through this flow, select Turn off and delete activity.
Google provides separate Android and iPhone and iPad instructions. Timeline controls are in the mobile app; Google says Timeline itself is not available in Maps on a computer. Google is gradually updating Search-services settings, and menu wording can vary with the device, app version, and account rollout. If a label differs, look for the equivalent Timeline or location-history control in the Maps app.
Turning Timeline off stops new Timeline saving on that device. It does not necessarily remove older Timeline records already stored on a device.

Delete saved Timeline history or set it to expire
To remove existing records, open Your Timeline in the Maps app. Google lets you delete all Timeline history or select particular days, visits, or routes. To remove an individual item, navigate to the relevant day and use the menu beside the visit. See Google’s Timeline instructions for Android or its iPhone and iPad instructions for the controls available on your device.
Choose automatic deletion
If you prefer not to keep older Timeline records indefinitely, Google Maps Help lists auto-delete thresholds of 3 months, 18 months, or 36 months. These are the available age settings described by Google’s current Timeline instructions; they are not a promise that a record will be erased from every copy at that exact moment.

Check device copies and backup separately
Timeline data is tied to eligible signed-in devices, and Google also offers an encrypted server backup. Deleting or turning off backup does not delete Timeline data stored on devices. Google’s Android instructions say backup must be opted into separately on each device, and that changes can take a few days to appear in a backup. If you want to clear old records comprehensively, check each device where you used Timeline and review the backup setting rather than assuming one deletion removed every copy.
Review other Google Maps and account activity
Maps history is not Timeline
Maps history can include searches, directions, viewing a place, sharing a place link, or calling a place. To review or delete that activity, use Google’s Manage your Maps history instructions. Deleting Maps history does not delete Timeline visits; Google also says Maps history deletion does not remove related searches or clicks or other listed account data.

Web & App Activity and Search Services History
Other Google activity can retain location-related information independently of Timeline. Google gives approximate location associated with a general area or IP address in Search and Maps activity as examples; camera settings may also include location information with photos. The account controls are transitioning: Search-services settings are rolling out gradually, and Web & App Activity may still control history and personalization where the newer settings are not yet available. Review the available activity controls in your Google Account if your goal is to reduce records beyond Timeline.
Stop Maps from accessing location or sharing it live
Change the phone’s location permission
Timeline controls saved history; your phone’s operating-system permission controls whether Google Maps can access the device’s location. If you want to stop Maps from accessing location at all, change the app’s location permission in your phone settings. You can also turn off device-wide location, understanding that this affects other apps and services too. Google’s privacy and location controls guidance explains that app and browser permissions, along with device location settings, determine whether location is available to apps and websites.

Review Location Sharing separately
Turning Timeline off does not stop you from sharing your live location with people through Google Maps. If the concern is that another person can see where you are now, review Location Sharing independently in Maps. Google also identifies Google Location Services and Find Hub as settings that Timeline does not change.
Know what Incognito mode does—and does not do
Maps Incognito is a narrower control for activity that you do not want saved to your Google Account through Maps. It is not a replacement for turning off Timeline or changing location permission. A VPN is not a way to disable GPS access or Timeline recording either: Google says a VPN may limit some information inferred from an IP address, but it does not change device location access, Timeline, or Location Sharing.

What to expect after deleting activity
Google says that when activity is manually deleted or removed by an auto-delete setting, the removal process begins immediately: Google aims to remove it from view and stop using it to tailor the experience, then works to delete it from storage systems. Google notes that limited data may be retained for business or legal requirements. That explanation is for Maps history and should not be taken as a specific Timeline erasure deadline.
Timeline deletion on one device may not be reflected on another, and other Google services can retain separate location-related information. Treat stopping future Timeline saves, deleting existing Timeline copies, and reducing other location access or activity as distinct tasks.
