Check the spool and visible filament path before considering a sensor, tube, feeder, or hub problem. The steps below distinguish common symptoms without assuming every AMS model uses the same repair procedure.
How filament moves through the AMS
On the original AMS, filament travels from a spool holder through the AMS feeder and hub, then through a buffer and PTFE tubing toward the printer and toolhead. Bambu Lab’s overview identifies the original AMS spool holders, hub, and buffer; the exact path and parts can differ by AMS and printer model. See Bambu Lab’s AMS introduction and use the instructions for your own setup.
Before troubleshooting, note the printer and AMS model, slot, filament type, exact on-screen message, whether the spool rotates, and the point where filament stops. Also note whether the printer detects filament. A photo of the route can help when contacting support. Avoid repeatedly forcing filament through a suspected jam.
Start with checks that do not require disassembly
- Check the spool. Confirm it can rotate freely and that the filament is not crossed, tangled, broken, or caught on a loose end.
- Inspect accessible filament and tubing. Look for a broken fragment, a visibly obstructed tube, or a tube that is not fully seated at an accessible connection. Do not pull hard against resistance.
- Run one controlled load attempt and observe. Record whether filament leaves the slot, reaches the printer, and is detected. Stop if it repeatedly retracts or meets resistance.
- Compare with external-spool feeding if your printer’s instructions permit it. If external feed works while AMS feed does not, that points toward the AMS route but does not identify which component is faulty.
- Use model-specific maintenance guidance for a jam. Bambu Lab’s support forum points to a troubleshooting guide for loading and unloading failures and a separate workflow guide. Consult the appropriate guide for your model rather than applying disassembly steps from another AMS generation. Bambu Lab support forum resource pointers
Diagnose by where the filament stops
Filament will not leave the spool or slot
Check for a tangled or crossed strand, a damaged or loose filament end, and spool rotation resistance. Inspect only visible, accessible parts of the route. If the spool cannot turn freely or the filament end is trapped, resolve that before investigating printer-side components.

Filament advances, then retracts
Note how far it travels and inspect for a broken piece or an accessible PTFE tube that is disconnected or obstructed. Resistance at a connection or farther along the route can produce similar symptoms, so repeated retractions do not prove that a particular feeder, hub, buffer, or tube has failed. AMS feed fails but external-spool feed works
This comparison makes the AMS path a reasonable focus for further checks, but it does not isolate a specific part. Follow the printer’s own external-feed and loading instructions; do not infer that the hub or feeder needs replacement from this test alone.

External feed also fails, or the printer does not detect filament
Consider a printer-side path, extruder, or sensing issue as well as the AMS. For a reported A1 Series “filament not feeding” case, Bambu Lab SupportAssistant specifically advised checking the filament sensor ribbon-cable connection and said replacement may solve the problem if the sensor is damaged. Filament is stuck or broken inside the route
Use the official maintenance instructions for the exact printer and AMS. Do not assume an original AMS, AMS Lite, AMS 2 Pro, or another variant has interchangeable disassembly steps. Stop before opening a feeder or hub if you do not have model-specific service instructions or are not comfortable with the repair. One community user reported springs and magnets coming loose after opening an AMS hub; that anecdote is not a repair procedure, but it illustrates the risk of unsupported disassembly. When a PTFE tube or sensor may need attention
PTFE tubing is part of the AMS filament route, and the AMS Quick Start Guide lists PTFE tubing and a PTFE tube connector among included accessories. A tube is a plausible replacement only when inspection establishes damage, wear, or obstruction; a loading error by itself is not proof that a tube is bad. Confirm the AMS generation, printer compatibility, dimensions, and connector type before buying. The available guide information does not establish one tube size that fits every AMS. Likewise, consider a filament sensor only when symptoms and checks point to sensing, and apply the A1 ribbon-cable advice only to the cited A1 context. For feeder, hub, buffer, or toolhead parts, identify the fault first and confirm compatible parts through model-specific Bambu Lab support or documentation.

When to contact Bambu Lab support
Escalate if the filament remains stuck after the model’s documented maintenance procedure, a fragment is inaccessible, the printer does not detect filament after checking an accessible sensor connection, or the next step would require opening a feeder or hub without service guidance. Provide the model and AMS version, slot and filament type, exact error, where filament stops, whether external feed behaves differently, and clear photos of the path.
