In SQL Server, “system tables” can mean either supported metadata interfaces or the Database Engine’s internal system base tables. For ordinary schema and object information, use documented catalog views such as sys.objects, sys.tables, and sys.columns—not the internal base tables. The term matters because those interfaces differ in supportability, coverage, and what a user is allowed to see.
What are SQL Server system tables?
The phrase is often used loosely for SQL Server metadata: information about objects, columns, permissions, and other database features. In practice, distinguish these two meanings:
- Catalog views are the documented, supported general interface to Database Engine catalog metadata. Microsoft says, “All user-available catalog metadata is exposed through catalog views.” See System catalog views (Transact-SQL).
- System base tables are internal engine structures, not intended for general customer use. Microsoft’s System Base Tables guidance says they are used only within the SQL Server Database Engine and are not for general customer use.
For application code and routine administration, treat catalog views and other documented metadata interfaces as the usable surface. The internal tables are implementation details, with no compatibility guarantee.
How do I list tables and columns?
Use sys.tables when you need tables, sys.objects for a broader inventory of database objects, and sys.columns for column metadata. For example, this lists visible user tables in the current database:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
SELECT t.name AS table_name, s.name AS schema_name
FROM sys.tables AS t
JOIN sys.schemas AS s ON s.schema_id = t.schema_id
ORDER BY s.name, t.name;
To list columns for visible tables:
SELECT s.name AS schema_name,
t.name AS table_name,
c.column_id,
c.name AS column_name
FROM sys.tables AS t
JOIN sys.schemas AS s ON s.schema_id = t.schema_id
JOIN sys.columns AS c ON c.object_id = t.object_id
ORDER BY s.name, t.name, c.column_id;
sys.objects is a base view and sys.tables is a derived view. A table is represented in both by the same metadata object and object_id; sys.tables adds table-specific columns. Choose the view that matches the object classes and fields you need rather than treating the two as separate copies. The relationship is documented in Microsoft’s catalog view guidance.
Avoid SELECT * against catalog views in production code. Microsoft may add columns in a future SQL Server release, which can change the shape of a result. Name the columns your query depends on.

What is the replacement for sysobjects and other old names?
Many names commonly called “system tables” date from SQL Server 2000. They are not necessarily physical tables in current releases: many were reimplemented as compatibility views for backward compatibility. Those views expose the older metadata model and do not include metadata for features introduced in SQL Server 2005 and later. Microsoft’s System Compatibility Views page describes these limitations.
| Legacy name | Modern interface | Use or caveat |
|---|---|---|
sysobjects |
sys.objects |
Database object metadata |
syscolumns |
sys.columns |
Column metadata |
sysdatabases |
sys.databases |
Database metadata |
sysusers |
sys.database_principals |
Database principal metadata |
sysindexes |
sys.indexes, sys.partitions, sys.allocation_units, or sys.dm_db_partition_stats |
Select based on whether you need index definitions, partitions, allocation units, or partition statistics. |
sysprocesses |
sys.dm_exec_connections, sys.dm_exec_sessions, and sys.dm_exec_requests |
Runtime connection, session, and request information is split across DMVs. |
These mappings come from Microsoft’s Mapping System Tables to System Views. A legacy name can map to multiple modern interfaces because SQL Server separates information that the older model grouped together. Microsoft also warns that some compatibility-view identifier columns can return NULL or encounter arithmetic overflow at larger user or type ID ranges; use the catalog views designed for the wider ranges.

Which metadata interface should I use?
| Interface | Best suited to | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
Catalog views (sys.*) |
Persistent Database Engine object definitions and schema metadata | Supported general catalog interface; not every SQL Server feature’s catalog data is included. |
| Dynamic management views (DMVs) | Current execution and operational state, such as requests, sessions, or locks | Use for runtime state, not as a blanket substitute for catalog metadata. |
INFORMATION_SCHEMA views |
Standardized metadata fields within their scope | System-table-independent and aligned with the ISO definition, but still subject to metadata visibility restrictions. |
| Feature-specific documented interfaces | Metadata for particular features outside the general catalog | Catalog views do not cover replication, backup, database maintenance plans, or SQL Server Agent catalog data. |
For feature-specific information, use that feature’s documented interface rather than expecting a general catalog view to contain it. For system information more broadly, Microsoft identifies supported system procedures, T-SQL, SMO, RMO, and catalog functions as published retrieval methods in its system base table guidance.
Why can’t I see all tables in sys.tables?
SQL Server limits metadata visibility according to ownership and permissions. Catalog views and metadata-emitting functions may show only objects the caller owns or has permission to access, so a short or empty result does not by itself prove that a table is absent. Microsoft documents this behavior in Metadata Visibility Configuration.

When a user needs broader discovery, an administrator can evaluate granting VIEW DEFINITION at the relevant object, database, or server scope. SQL Server 2022 and later also provide VIEW SECURITY DEFINITION and VIEW PERFORMANCE DEFINITION at appropriate scopes. Choose the narrowest permission that meets the task, and verify the applicable behavior for the specific SQL Server release and scope.
Can I update SQL Server system tables?
No. Do not attempt to modify system base tables directly, including through the Dedicated Administrator Connection (DAC). Direct access to those internals is not a supported customer scenario, and manual updates are unsupported. Make metadata changes through supported SQL Server statements and interfaces—for example, the appropriate DDL operation to create or alter a database object—and avoid relying on undocumented columns or internal behavior.

Check the documentation for your SQL Server release
Catalog-view, compatibility, and permission guidance is published in versioned Microsoft Learn documentation. The linked pages use specific SQL Server documentation versions; confirm that the view, permission, and feature behavior applies to the SQL Server release and deployment you operate. This is especially important when translating old queries or granting metadata permissions.
