Both can support document-based work on your computer when configured to use local models. The key is checking where each part of your workflow runs: “local” describes a configuration, not a guarantee that an app never connects to the internet.
What “local” means for private editing
A local writing assistant runs a selected AI model on your device, rather than sending every prompt to a hosted model. That can reduce the need to transmit drafts to an AI provider. It does not, by itself, prove that the entire application is offline or that every optional feature keeps data on-device.
Before using either app with sensitive writing, check which model provider is selected and whether connected features are enabled. Model downloads, app updates, model discovery, and optional cloud services may involve network requests. The vendor documentation below describes each product’s stated behavior; it is not an independent security audit.

LM Studio: documented offline chat and document workflows
LM Studio’s Offline Operation documentation says downloaded models run locally, prompts entered in chats do not leave the device, and core features such as local model chat and document chat do not generally require internet access. For document use, LM Studio states: “When you drag and drop a document into LM Studio to chat with it or perform RAG, that document stays on your machine.” This describes the vendor’s stated behavior for that workflow.

There is a setup boundary: finding and downloading models, downloading runtimes, and checking for app updates involve connectivity. The offline guide says to obtain model files first and also mentions sideloading them. If you need an offline editing session, prepare the model and required files before disconnecting.
LM Studio’s privacy policy distinguishes local use from connected activity. It says local messages, histories, and documents are not transmitted when users download and run models locally. It separately describes data processing for update checks, model searches and downloads, direct support email, and cloud requests. The policy says cloud requests are processed transiently when users purchase and choose cloud services. These statements should not be extended to third-party model sources or every connected workflow.

AnythingLLM: a desktop route for documents and workflows
AnythingLLM describes its desktop app as local by default and says its model, documents, and chats can be stored locally. Its product information also describes downloading and running an LLM, chatting with documents, and building workflows locally without a cloud API key. The company summarizes its approach this way: “AnythingLLM is designed to be local by default. Everything from the model, documents, chats, all stored locally on your desktop.” See the AnythingLLM product page and its all-in-one application overview.
AnythingLLM can also connect to local or cloud model providers. “Local by default” is therefore not a substitute for checking your actual provider selection and enabled features. AnythingLLM says its app can recommend a model based on hardware specifications, but the reviewed product pages do not state minimum RAM, storage, processor, or graphics requirements. Use its recommendation for your system rather than treating an unverified hardware list as universal.

How to choose for your editing workflow
- Choose LM Studio to investigate if your priority is a clearly documented offline mode for local model chat and document chat after you have obtained the model files.
- Choose AnythingLLM to investigate if you want a desktop app whose product description emphasizes local documents and workflows, and you are comfortable verifying the model-provider configuration.
- Do not choose on assumed output quality. The official sources reviewed do not compare editing quality, measure speed, or test either product against cloud assistants.
- Do not buy hardware based on these descriptions alone. Neither reviewed source establishes a minimum computer specification or a comparative performance result.
Set up a more private editing session
- Choose the desktop app and model provider. Confirm whether the selected provider is local or cloud-based; both products can be configured with different provider arrangements.
- Obtain the model and any required runtime while connected. LM Studio documents model search and downloads, runtime downloads, and update checks as connectivity-dependent. AnythingLLM’s desktop description includes downloading and running an LLM.
- Use a non-sensitive sample first. Check that the model can perform the editing task you need—such as clarifying a paragraph—before adding private drafts. This is a workflow precaution, not a claim that either app has been independently audited.
- Review connected features and provider settings. Turn off optional cloud use if your goal is local inference, and check whether any other enabled feature sends content outside the device.
- Disconnect only after setup if offline operation is required. LM Studio documents core local chat and document chat as usable offline after model setup. Test your intended workflow without a network connection rather than assuming every app feature works offline.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—settle
The vendor documentation supports treating LM Studio and AnythingLLM as candidates for local document workflows, subject to configuration. It does not establish which assistant produces better edits, how quickly either runs on a given computer, or what hardware is sufficient. It also does not amount to an independent security audit. For sensitive work, make the decision based on the actual provider and features you enable, and avoid treating a vendor’s local-processing description as proof about every plugin, model source, or connected service.
