Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf your Google Home or Nest speaker or display won’t connect to Wi-Fi, first check whether other devices can get online. If they can, work through power, distance, app discovery, and saved-network settings before resetting the speaker or display. The steps below separate a home-network outage from setup problems and a device that is offline after a router or password change.
First, identify which Wi-Fi problem you have
“Offline,” “Wi-Fi network isn’t listed,” and “can’t connect” point to different parts of the setup process. Use the symptom to choose where to begin:
- No devices can use the home Wi-Fi: troubleshoot the router or internet service first.
- The Wi-Fi network isn’t listed during setup: check the phone’s connection, signal, and compatibility.
- The network is listed but setup fails: check the password and restart the equipment and app.
- The device went offline after a new router or password change: remove its saved network in Google Home and set it up again.
- The speaker or display doesn’t appear in Google Home: troubleshoot device discovery separately.
Google’s guidance here applies to Google Home and Nest smart speakers and displays, not necessarily other Nest product categories. The steps are based on Google’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting, new-network instructions, and setup troubleshooting.
Check the home network, power, and password
- Make sure the speaker or display is plugged into a wall outlet and powered on.
- Test the same Wi-Fi network on another device. If that device also can’t get online, unplug the router, wait one minute, and plug it back in. If service still doesn’t return, contact your internet service provider to check for an outage or changed network settings.
- Check the Wi-Fi password. Enter it again carefully, matching capitalization and every character.
If other devices connect normally, the home network is available and you can focus on the speaker or display, its setup app, or its saved credentials.

- Each nest Wi Fi router provides up to 2200 square feet of fast, reliable Wi Fi coverage for your home. [1]
If the Wi-Fi network isn’t listed during setup
- Move the speaker or display close to the router. Google recommends placing it within 15–20 feet (4–6 m) during setup.
- Check whether the phone or tablet can see and use the Wi-Fi where the speaker or display is located. A weak signal there can prevent setup.
- If you’re trying to set up on a 5 GHz network, the phone or tablet running setup must support 5 GHz.
- Use the current Google Home app and a supported phone or tablet. Google’s guide reviewed on October 4, 2026, lists Android 9.0 or later and iOS 17.0 or later; compatibility requirements can change, so check Google’s current setup guidance.
Google’s discovery instructions for Android also suggest checking the phone’s Wi-Fi settings for the device’s temporary setup network if the device is not found. See Google’s Android-specific discovery steps.
Restart the router, speaker, app, and phone Wi-Fi
Restarting the equipment and app is a low-risk next step when the network is visible but the connection fails, or when setup is stuck.

- Unplug the router, wait one minute, then plug it back in and wait for it to reconnect.
- Unplug the speaker or display, wait one minute, then plug it back in.
- Force-close the Google Home app, then reopen it.
- Turn Wi-Fi off and back on in the phone or tablet’s settings.
- Retry setup. If prompted, enter the Wi-Fi password again.
If your router broadcasts both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, try the other band. Avoid changing advanced router settings unless you have a specific reason to do so.
Reconnect after getting a new router or changing the Wi-Fi password
A speaker or display can remain offline because it still has the old network details saved. In Google Home, forget that network and run setup again:

- Nest Wifi Pro is up to 2x faster than Wi-Fi 6, so you get super fast speeds and a reliable connection for your entire home[1]
- Three Wi-Fi routers provide up to 6600 square feet of fast, reliable Wi-Fi[2]; and you can customize your setup to create a mesh Wi-Fi system for the coverage you need
- Nest Wifi Pro uses the latest, most advanced Wi-Fi 6E technology[3], so it isn’t compatible with previous generations of Google Wifi or Nest Wifi
- Nest Wifi Pro automatically adjusts your Wi-Fi network’s performance and activity; it prioritizes video calls and helps websites load quickly
- It has built-in technology to make sure your connection is strong and consistent, even at the edge of your Wi-Fi network’s coverage[2]
- In the Google Home app, tap the speaker or display’s device tile.
- Open Settings → Device information → Wi-Fi → Forget this network.
- Return to Home, add or search for the device, and follow the setup instructions to connect it to the current network.
If Google Home says it could not communicate with your device while you try to forget the network, or if the network settings cannot be changed or setup on the new network fails, Google advises factory-resetting the device and setting it up again. Treat that as a later step: a factory reset erases device data. Follow the model-specific reset instructions in Google’s new-network guide.
If the device doesn’t appear in the Google Home app
This is a discovery problem, not the same as a device that appears in the app but is offline. Try these checks before resetting:

- Confirm the speaker or display is powered on and in setup mode.
- Restart the device and force-close and reopen the Google Home app.
- Turn the phone’s Wi-Fi off and back on.
- Try another supported phone or tablet, if available.
- Move the device nearer the router and look for its temporary Wi-Fi network in the phone’s Wi-Fi settings if you’re using Android.
If the device still does not appear, Google’s discovery guidance recommends a factory reset as a later troubleshooting step. Resetting clears the device’s data and cannot be undone; use the instructions for your specific model in Google Nest Help.

After the usual checks fail, a temporary phone hotspot can test whether the speaker or display can join a Wi-Fi network at all. Google says hotspots may work but are not fully supported, and reliability can depend on carrier range, interference, and your data plan.
