As of October 4, 2026, Apple’s comparison page lists Apple Watch SE 3, Series 12, and Ultra 4 as its current models. Choose SE 3 if you want the smaller aluminum option, Series 12 if you want more choices of size and case material, or Ultra 4 if you want the largest 49 mm titanium model. The right choice depends on which size, features, and connectivity you will actually use—not simply which watch sits highest in the lineup.
What is the difference between Apple Watch SE, Series, and Ultra?
The tiers differ most clearly in case size and material, listed display brightness, and the available configurations. Apple’s current comparison page lists SE 3 in two aluminum sizes, Series 12 in two sizes and several materials, and Ultra 4 as a 49 mm titanium model. The brightness and battery figures below are Apple specifications or estimates, not independent tests.
| Model | Case size and material | Maximum listed display brightness | Apple Low Power Mode battery estimate including sleep tracking | Best fit by configuration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch SE 3 | 40 mm or 44 mm; aluminum | Up to 1,000 nits | Up to 32 hours; Apple testing conducted July and August 2025 | Smaller aluminum configurations |
| Apple Watch Series 12 | 42 mm or 46 mm; aluminum, titanium, or ceramic options | Up to 2,000 nits | Up to 38 hours; Apple testing conducted July and August 2026 | More size and material choices |
| Apple Watch Ultra 4 | 49 mm; titanium | Up to 3,000 nits | Up to 84 hours; Apple testing conducted July and August 2026 | Largest configuration; consider whether the size and specific features suit your needs |
These are listed maximum brightness values, not a guarantee of how bright a display will appear in every setting. Apple’s battery test scenarios differ across models, so the hours are not a controlled, head-to-head estimate of typical consumer use. Apple says actual battery life depends on use, configuration, cellular network, signal strength, and other factors. See Apple’s Apple Watch model comparison for the specifications and test footnotes.
Which Apple Watch should you buy?
Choose SE 3 for a smaller aluminum watch
SE 3 is listed in 40 mm and 44 mm aluminum configurations. It is the straightforward match if those sizes and material fit your priorities. Its listed maximum brightness is lower than the Series 12 and Ultra 4 figures; whether that difference matters depends on how and where you use the watch.

Choose Series 12 for more choice
Series 12 is listed in 42 mm and 46 mm sizes, with aluminum, titanium, or ceramic options. That flexibility makes it the most configurable of these three lineups. Check the specific model’s feature listing rather than assuming every size or material option has identical availability or capabilities.
Choose Ultra 4 if its 49 mm titanium configuration suits you
Ultra 4 is listed as a 49 mm titanium model and has the highest maximum brightness and Low Power Mode battery estimate among these three models. Those specifications do not make it the right choice for everyone: compare its size and the features you need against the smaller alternatives before deciding.

How should you compare the features?
Apple’s comparison grid covers health, sleep, outdoor, connectivity, and other functions, but a feature listed for one configuration should not be assumed to apply to every model. Availability can depend on the model, software, country or region, and conditions described in Apple’s feature footnotes. Health notifications are not diagnoses.
- Look up the exact feature you care about in Apple’s comparison and read its footnote, including any country or region restriction.
- For health-related functions, check the conditions and limitations rather than treating a notification as a medical diagnosis.
- If you want cellular connectivity, distinguish GPS from GPS + Cellular. Cellular hardware does not by itself establish that service is included; check local carrier availability and terms.
- Compare the case dimensions and your preferred material for the specific configuration, rather than relying only on the SE, Series, or Ultra tier name.
What do Apple’s battery estimates mean?
The comparison page gives Low Power Mode estimates that include sleep tracking: up to 32 hours for SE 3, 38 hours for Series 12, and 84 hours for Ultra 4. Apple’s cited SE 3 testing took place in July and August 2025; Series 12 and Ultra 4 testing took place in July and August 2026. These are manufacturer test estimates, not guaranteed daily runtimes. Apple describes differing workloads and connectivity assumptions across models, and says actual results vary with use, configuration, network, signal strength, and other factors. Check the model-specific test notes before using the figures to predict your own routine.

Will a current Apple Watch work with your iPhone?
Apple’s comparison page states that Series 11, Ultra 3, and SE 3 require iPhone 11 or later with iOS 26 or later. Because compatibility can change with model and software updates, check Apple’s current compatibility note for the exact watch you plan to buy and your market. The cited requirement names Series 11 and Ultra 3, not Series 12 and Ultra 4, so do not assume it establishes compatibility requirements for those newer models.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are older Apple Watch generations still shown?
Yes. Apple’s comparison page also retains SE 2, Series 11, and Ultra 3 among other models. Their presence on the page does not make them the newest generations in the current lineup snapshot: as of October 4, 2026, the page identifies SE 3, Series 12, and Ultra 4 as current. Lineups and availability can change, so confirm the model listing when making a purchase decision.
