Call Screening asks an unsaved caller to give their name and reason before your iPhone rings; Silence sends calls from unsaved numbers to voicemail without ringing. Choose screening when you want context before deciding whether to answer, or Silence when avoiding interruptions matters more. Apple offers both under Settings > Apps > Phone.
How the two options handle an unsaved caller

Does Call Screening answer the call for you?
Yes, briefly: with Ask Reason for Calling selected, the iPhone automatically answers the call to ask for the caller’s name and reason. It then rings after the caller responds, and you can decide whether to answer. The caller is not simply sent straight to voicemail.
What does “unknown” mean?
For this feature, an unknown caller is someone whose number is not saved in your Contacts—not necessarily a hidden, suspicious, or spam number. A legitimate call from a school, medical office, or family member may be treated as unknown if that number is not saved. Add important numbers to Contacts if you want your iPhone to recognize them consistently. Apple explains this definition in Manage unknown callers on iPhone.

How to choose and change the setting
- Open Settings > Apps > Phone.
- Under the unknown-caller screening control, choose Never, Ask Reason for Calling, or Silence.
Apple’s current instructions use these labels, but their exact placement may vary by software version.
Silence is different from the Unknown Callers list
The Unknown Callers filter is a call-history organization feature, not a setting for whether your phone rings. It moves missed calls and voicemails from unknown numbers to a separate list. Apple describes that feature in Use Unified layout in the Phone app on iPhone.

Important limits and troubleshooting
- Roaming: Apple says calls received while roaming are not screened, regardless of your settings.
- Emergency calls: Screening turns off for 24 hours after you call emergency services.
- Possible charges: Standard calling and data rates may apply.
- Older software: Apple says devices running a version earlier than iOS 17 need Live Voicemail enabled for screening.
These qualifications are documented in Apple’s Manage unknown callers on iPhone article. If calls you expect are going straight to voicemail, check the unknown-caller setting first.
