Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Before connecting an account to an AI agent, check that every requested permission is necessary for the task. Prefer read-only and narrowly scoped access when possible, and treat the ability to send, edit, delete, spend money, or change account settings as higher risk. Also find out how actions are approved, monitored, and revoked. A permission label by itself does not tell you how the agent stores access tokens or handles your data.
Start with the task, not the permission bundle
Write down what you want the agent to do, which account data it needs, and whether it must act or can simply prepare a recommendation. Then assess each requested permission against that task. This makes it easier to spot a broad access bundle that includes capabilities the job does not require.
Check which data and actions the agent can access
Review both the resources the agent can reach and the actions it can take. For example, ask whether it can read messages, files, or calendar entries; whether it can create, edit, send, delete, or share them; and whether access is limited to selected items or extends across the account. If reading is enough, do not grant write access just because it is offered in the same bundle.
OWASP recommends least privilege and per-tool permission scoping. Its guidance gives read-only OAuth access to an email service as an example of removing unnecessary permissions: OWASP: Excessive Agency and OWASP Top 10 for Large Language Model Applications.

#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Treat consequential actions as a separate risk
Broad write or delete access, payments, account recovery, role changes, and administrative controls can affect more than the immediate task. Find out whether the agent can prepare an action for your review instead of executing it, and whether approval applies to the specific action. For sensitive operations, look for explicit authorization, additional authentication, or human oversight. OWASP also recommends separating decisions from execution for irreversible actions.
Check whose identity and credentials are being used
A connected account delegates authority; it is not merely a convenient login. Avoid giving an agent your personal password or a broad, reusable credential. Check whether the access is attributable to both you and the agent, and whether the agent has its own narrowly scoped identity and entitlements.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
NIST warns that sharing credentials between people or agents creates accountability gaps, and says agent credentials and entitlements should be bound to the identity of the user or system operating the agent. It also cautions that modern authorization protocols do not automatically prevent overly broad access. See NIST: Back to the Future: Why Agentic AI Needs a Strong Identity Foundation. NIST’s related identity-and-authorization concept paper is not a certification or endorsement.
Account for instructions hidden in content the agent reads
Email, documents, and websites can contain malicious or misleading instructions. Because an agent may use tools in response to what it reads, consider whether untrusted content could lead it to take an action outside the task. OWASP identifies prompt injection and tool abuse as risks, and recommends validating external input, limiting available tools and permissions, and applying human oversight to high-risk actions. A read permission can therefore matter even when it does not itself allow changes: it can expose content that influences an agent with other capabilities.

Look for oversight, action history, and revocation
Before granting access, locate the account provider’s connected-app or active-app controls. Check whether you can see which connection authorized an action and inspect relevant action history or logs. Learn how to revoke the grant, and review continuing access when the task ends or the connection is no longer needed. OWASP’s AI security guidance recommends reviewing and revoking agent credentials and execution accounts over time: OWASP Gen AI Security Project.
Revocation controls and procedures differ by provider, so confirm them in the account’s current authorization settings and official documentation. General guidance cannot establish the exact steps for a particular service.

Compare agents on the same task
If you are choosing between agents, assess each against the same job rather than comparing permission labels in isolation.
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Scope | Which data types, resources, and actions are requested? Is access read-only or write-enabled, selected or account-wide? |
| Identity and credentials | Can you attribute access to the user and agent? Are credentials narrowly scoped rather than shared or broadly reusable? |
| Action controls | Which actions require approval or additional authentication? Can an irreversible action be separated from the agent’s recommendation? |
| Visibility | Can you inspect the access grant, actions taken, and relevant logs? |
| Revocation and lifecycle | Can you remove access, and is there a way to review it after the task or when it is no longer needed? |
| Data handling | What do the agent’s current product documents say about token storage, data retention, and use of account data? |
For a specific connection, verify effective permissions, token handling, retention, logging, approval behavior, and revocation in documentation from both the agent and the account provider. These details vary by service and cannot be inferred from general security guidance.

A final check before you connect
- Can you explain why each requested permission is needed for the task?
- Could the task be completed with read-only access or a narrower resource selection?
- Are consequential actions gated by suitable approval, authentication, or human review?
- Can you identify the user and agent associated with the grant?
- Do you know where to review and revoke access?
- Have you checked the named agent’s current data-handling terms and the account provider’s authorization controls?
A May 1, 2026 CISA bulletin summarizing joint agency guidance similarly advises limiting agent autonomy and avoiding broad or unrestricted access, especially to sensitive data or critical systems: CISA bulletin.
