If a company says your personal data was exposed, first check exactly what information the notice says was involved. Then take targeted steps: change exposed or reused passwords, protect credit if identity data may be at risk, and check financial accounts for unfamiliar activity. For U.S. consumer guidance tailored to the information exposed, use the FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov/databreach.
Start by identifying what the notice says was exposed
Read the company’s notice carefully. Look for the types of information involved, any steps the company recommends, and whether it offers a free service for a limited time. Do not assume every incident involved Social Security numbers or payment details: the right response depends on the data named in your notice. The FTC provides a guide to next steps based on the information exposed at IdentityTheft.gov/databreach.
The advice here reflects general U.S. consumer guidance. Without the specific notice, incident, and your jurisdiction, it cannot establish whether you qualify for a legal remedy, compensation, or a particular benefit.
Be wary of follow-up messages about the breach
Scammers may use a breach announcement to make fake calls, texts, or emails seem credible. If a message asks you to verify information, sign in, or claim a service, do not rely on its link or phone number. Contact the company through a website or phone number you already know is genuine. The FTC explains how to protect personal information from hackers and scammers in its consumer guidance.

Take action based on the information exposed
If a password was exposed
Change the password for the affected account, then update other accounts that use the same or a similar password. Use a distinct password for each account. Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) where available; an authentication-app code or a security key can serve as an additional factor. A security key works only with services that support it, and it does not replace changing exposed or reused passwords. The FTC’s breach advice specifically recommends changing the affected and similar passwords; see its data-breach guidance and password advice.
If identity or credit information may have been exposed
Consider placing a credit freeze with each of the three nationwide credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. A freeze is free and does not affect your credit score. It restricts access to your credit report, which can make it harder for someone to open new credit in your name. It remains in place until you lift it. When applying for credit, you may need to lift the freeze with the bureau or bureaus a lender uses.

A freeze is not a shield for existing accounts: it does not stop unauthorized charges on a current bank or credit-card account. Keep monitoring those accounts as well. The FTC compares freezes and fraud alerts in its credit-freeze and fraud-alert guidance.
If bank or card details may be involved
Review bank and card statements for unfamiliar transactions and contact the relevant financial institution promptly about any unauthorized activity. Also check bills for charges or accounts you do not recognize.

If a Social Security number or other identity information may be involved
Review your credit reports for unfamiliar accounts or activity. If you believe someone is misusing your identity, report it at IdentityTheft.gov; the FTC says it can provide a recovery plan. The FTC’s overview of what to know about identity theft explains further steps.
Choose between a credit freeze and a fraud alert
Both tools are intended to help protect against new credit being opened in your name, but they work differently. A freeze restricts access to your credit report; a fraud alert asks lenders to verify your identity before granting credit. Consider which fits your needs, including the added step of lifting a freeze when a lender needs access. Neither tool replaces checking existing bank and card accounts.

Assess any credit-monitoring offer before relying on it
The FTC advises consumers to take advantage of free credit monitoring or identity-theft insurance offered by the affected company. Check the notice for the enrollment deadline and terms. Before signing up for paid monitoring, ask what the service monitors, which alerts or recovery help it includes, how long any free period lasts, what it costs afterward, and how to cancel. There is no universal service standard established here, and monitoring should not be treated as prevention or as a replacement for password changes, account checks, or a credit freeze when appropriate. See the FTC’s credit guidance for more information.
