If notifications from just one Android app arrive late—or appear only after you open it—start with that app’s notification and background-use settings. Then check Battery Saver, Data Saver, unused-app controls, and interruption modes. Menu names vary by phone, so use the closest matching settings on your device and change one thing at a time.
First, identify what is actually delayed
Notice whether the alert appears late in the notification shade, arrives on time but without sound or vibration, appears only after you open the app, or does not appear at all. These symptoms can have different causes: an alert may be silent or filtered rather than delivered late.
If your phone offers notification history, check it for recent or dismissed alerts. Android’s notification controls and history vary by device; Google’s Control notifications on Android guide describes the available controls.
Also compare when the app’s event happened with when its notification appeared, if the app shows an event time. Note whether the issue occurs only on mobile data, only while a battery-saving mode is on, or across both Wi-Fi and mobile data. These clues help narrow down which setting to inspect.

Check notification permission and alert style for the affected app
- Open Settings and find the affected app under Notifications or Apps. Depending on your phone, you may need to open the app’s info page first.
- Confirm that notifications are allowed. If the phone shows notification categories or channels, check that the category for the alert you expect is enabled.
- Check whether the relevant alert is set to silent. On Pixel, notifications can be set to Default or Silent; silent notifications can appear in the notification shade without sound or vibration. On other phones, labels and behavior may differ.
Google’s Pixel notification guidance explains app notification controls and notes that battery or interruption settings can also affect alerts.
Review background battery use for that app
Android may limit an app’s background activity to conserve battery. Google’s Pixel guidance says Adaptive Battery “may reduce performance and delay notifications.” That is a possible cause, not proof that battery optimization is responsible for every delayed alert.

On Pixel devices covered by Google’s instructions, open Settings → Apps → See all apps → [affected app] → App battery usage → Allow background usage. Other Android phones may use different menu names or offer different controls.
If the app is restricted, allow more background use for that app as a targeted test. Google cautions that allowing background use can consume more battery. Change only the affected app, then see whether alerts improve; restore the previous setting if it does not help or battery use becomes unacceptable. Check Battery Saver and Data Saver
Battery Saver
Battery Saver can limit or turn off background activity, and some apps, network connections, and features may be delayed. If it is enabled, temporarily turn it off while observing whether the affected app’s notifications arrive more promptly. If that changes the symptom, Battery Saver may be contributing; it does not establish that it is the only cause.
Google’s Android battery guidance describes Battery Saver’s effects and recommends restarting and checking for updates as troubleshooting steps.

Data Saver and background data
If notifications are prompt on Wi-Fi but late on mobile data, check whether Data Saver is restricting the app’s background data. Google Play Help explains that background data allows apps to fetch information or provide notifications while you are not using them.
Look in the affected app’s mobile-data or data-usage settings for an option such as Unrestricted data or Allow background data usage. The exact label and path depend on your Android version and device. Allowing background data may increase mobile-data use. Check unused-app handling and interruption modes
Unused-app settings
Android can pause activity for apps you rarely use, which can affect background work and notifications. Open Settings → Apps and look for Unused apps or a similar section. If the affected app has Pause app activity if unused enabled, consider turning it off for that app. Google’s unused-app guidance describes this behavior.
Do Not Disturb and other modes
Review Do Not Disturb and any enabled Bedtime, Driving, or custom modes. Their notification filters may silence or suppress an alert even when the app generated it. Check the mode’s allowed apps, people, and notification settings rather than assuming the app failed to deliver the notification. Google explains these controls in its Modes and Do Not Disturb guide.
Retest one change at a time, then escalate
- Change one setting that matches the symptom—for example, the app’s battery restriction if the problem occurs in the background, or its background-data access if it occurs only on mobile data.
- Wait for or trigger a real notification from the app, then compare its arrival with the event time where possible. If the symptom does not change, restore the setting before testing another one.
- Restart the phone and install available Android and app updates if the delay continues.
- If only this app remains affected, check its own notification settings or contact the app developer. If several apps are affected, or your phone’s menus differ substantially, consult the phone manufacturer’s support for device-specific steps.
There is no guaranteed single setting that fixes every delayed notification. Avoid broad measures such as clearing Google Play Services data, factory-resetting the phone, or installing a notification-fixer app unless device-specific support gives you a clear reason and recovery plan.
