If Google Home or Nest devices keep going offline, first find out whether the problem is your internet connection, whole-home Wi-Fi, or one device. Check other devices and your service, then investigate signal, interference, network changes, and device-specific settings before buying equipment or resetting devices.

First, find out whether the problem affects one device or the whole home

Test whether another device can connect to your Wi-Fi and reach the internet. On a phone, temporarily turn off cellular data so it cannot hide a Wi-Fi problem by switching to mobile service.

  • Several Nest devices are offline: Check that they have power, confirm internet service is working, and check for an ISP or Google service issue. Restart the router if the connection is otherwise available.
  • Only one Nest device is offline: Check that device’s error message and follow its model-specific connection guidance rather than changing settings for every device.

Google says Nest products will automatically try to reconnect to the network periodically. If they remain offline, use the checks below to identify what is preventing that reconnection.

Check the device, app, and recent Wi-Fi changes

Look for an error message in Google Home or the Nest app, and make sure the app is current. If you changed your router, Wi-Fi name, password, or internet provider, affected devices may need to be connected to the new network. Google’s instructions for connecting Nest or Home devices to a new Wi-Fi network can help you choose the right process for your device.

Google Nest Wifi - AC2200 - Mesh WiFi System - Wifi Router - 2200 Sq Ft Coverage - 1 pack
  • Each nest Wi Fi router provides up to 2200 square feet of fast, reliable Wi Fi coverage for your home. [1]

When pairing, connect your phone to the same Wi-Fi network you want the device to use. On applicable iOS versions, allow Google Home to access the local network. If setup stalls, restart the app and phone, then restart the assisting device and network equipment as directed by the Google device-pairing troubleshooting guide.

Improve Wi-Fi signal where the device is installed

Distance is only part of the problem: walls, floors, furniture, appliances, and other obstacles can weaken a connection. As a diagnostic test, move the affected device nearer to the router or a mesh point. If it reconnects, coverage or placement is a likely part of the problem.

  • Three Wi-Fi routers provide up to 6600 square feet of fast, reliable Wi-Fi[2]; and you can customize your setup to create a mesh Wi-Fi system for the coverage you need
  • Nest Wifi Pro uses the latest, most advanced Wi-Fi 6E technology[3], so it isn’t compatible with previous generations of Google Wifi or Nest Wifi
  • Nest Wifi Pro automatically adjusts your Wi-Fi network’s performance and activity; it prioritizes video calls and helps websites load quickly
  • It has built-in technology to make sure your connection is strong and consistent, even at the edge of your Wi-Fi network’s coverage[2]

Put the router and mesh points in open locations rather than behind furniture or inside cabinets. If you use Google Nest Wifi or Google Wifi, run the Google Home mesh test. When a point reports a weak connection, move it closer to the primary point and position it between that point and the area with poor coverage. A mesh point in a dead zone may not receive a strong enough connection to help devices beyond it.

For a Nest thermostat, Google’s troubleshooting guidance treats signal strength below 50 or ping above 1000 as reasons to investigate interference. These are device-specific indicators from Google’s thermostat guidance, not universal thresholds for Wi-Fi devices.

Check for interference and device-specific router requirements

Nearby Wi-Fi networks can compete for airtime. Other wireless equipment—including microwaves, baby monitors, cordless phones, Bluetooth devices, and wireless video equipment—can also interfere, particularly with 2.4 GHz connections. Temporarily switch off likely sources one at a time and check whether the Nest device reconnects. If possible, move the device or router away from a suspected source.

Router settings are not interchangeable across products. Check the guidance for the exact model before changing bands, compatibility, or isolation settings:

Google Nest Wifi Router AC2200 Mesh System 1-Pack Covers Up to 2200 Sq Ft
  • The product is refurbished, is fully functional and in excellent condition. Backed by the 90-day Amazon Renewed Guarantee.
  • Nest thermostat: Google’s thermostat guidance includes checks for 2.4 GHz and, in some setup scenarios, 802.11 b/g/n compatibility. It also lists a DHCP lease time of at least two hours and Power Save Mode as settings to inspect. These are checks for the stated thermostat troubleshooting scenarios, not requirements for every Google Home product.
  • Nest Protect: It cannot connect to a 5 GHz network. Multicast or wireless-isolation settings can also affect communication between Nest devices. See Google’s Nest Protect connection troubleshooting rather than applying thermostat settings to Protect.

If the router was recently updated, check its current settings and firmware as well as the device requirements. Avoid changing multiple settings at once; changing one and retesting makes it easier to identify the cause.

Restart network equipment and verify the result

For a whole-home connection problem, restart network equipment in the order recommended for your setup. Google’s network guidance is to restart the modem first and let it finish, then power the router or primary point, followed by any additional points. After the network is back, reopen Google Home, run a mesh test if applicable, and check the device that originally went offline.

Would a Wi-Fi extender or mesh point help?

Consider extra coverage equipment only after testing the internet connection, improving placement, and checking for interference. Google suggests trying a Wi-Fi range extender when a Nest thermostat has a weak signal, but an extender will not fix an ISP outage, a device that needs new Wi-Fi credentials, or a router setting that blocks the connection. Performance and compatibility depend on the equipment and the layout between the router and device.

Before adding equipment, check whether it supports the bands and standards your device needs, works with your existing router or mesh system, and can be placed where it will receive a useful signal. Google states that Nest Wifi Pro cannot join a mesh with Nest Wifi or Google Wifi points; check the Nest Wifi setup guidance before mixing mesh equipment.
