If Google Home commands are missed or delayed, first identify where they fail: does the speaker ignore “Hey Google,” wake but misunderstand you, or understand you but fail to control a smart-home device? Check power, the microphone and the device’s indicators, then test the network only if the speaker is slow or offline. These steps help distinguish “Google Home not responding to voice commands” from a Wi-Fi or linked-device problem before you change settings or buy equipment.

Start with a quick diagnosis

  1. No wake indicator: Check that the device has power and its microphone is not muted. Then try adjusting hotword sensitivity and restarting it.
  2. It wakes but gets the request wrong: Ask it to repeat the question. If it repeats you incorrectly, try speaking more slowly or rephrasing.
  3. It understands but a smart-home action fails: Test the device in the Google Home app, then check its power, network, Home assignment and linked account.
  4. It responds slowly or is offline: Check Wi-Fi performance, router or mesh-point placement, and your internet connection.

These symptoms point to different parts of the process. A network fix will not correct a muted microphone or an unclear device name, and changing a device name will not fix poor Wi-Fi coverage.

If Google Home does not wake to your voice

Check power and microphone state

Make sure the speaker or display is plugged in and powered. Check its physical microphone switch or mute control; the control’s location and operation vary by model, so use the instructions for your specific Google Home or Nest device rather than assuming every model works the same way.

Say “Hey Google” or “OK Google” and watch for the device’s wake indicator. Google says to check the LED dots on a speaker, the light ring on a Google Home speaker, or the colored dots on a Nest display. If the microphone is muted, the device will not hear the wake phrase.

Adjust hotword sensitivity and restart

If the microphone is on but the device still does not reliably detect the wake phrase, adjust hotword sensitivity in the Google Home app if that setting is available for your device. Restart the speaker or display by disconnecting its power, then reconnecting it. Google’s model-specific troubleshooting instructions are in Fix issues with ‘Hey Google’ on a Google smart speaker or display.

If it wakes but misunderstands the command

When the device reacts to the wake phrase but gives the wrong answer or takes the wrong action, test whether speech recognition is the problem. Say, “Hey Google, repeat the question.” If the repeated question is inaccurate, try speaking more slowly or using different wording. Google’s troubleshooting guidance says: “If it’s still not recognizing the question, speak slower or try another question.” (Google Home and Nest Help.)

If the device understood your words but chose an unexpected action, make the request more specific. For example, use the device’s name or room in the command and check that the name in Google Home matches what you call it.

If one smart-home device does not respond

If other commands work but one light, plug, thermostat or other linked device does not, focus on that device and its connection rather than the speaker’s microphone.

If commands are slow or the device is offline

Slow replies can have several causes, and not every delay is caused by Wi-Fi. Google identifies distance from the router or Wi-Fi point, frequency, physical barriers, interference and competing network traffic as factors that can affect Wi-Fi performance.

  1. Check placement: Move the speaker closer to the router or a mesh Wi-Fi point and see whether the response improves. For mesh Wi-Fi, check that points are placed appropriately and have a clear connection to one another.
  2. Check the network: Restart your network equipment and consider whether other devices are also slow. If the internet connection itself is slow, check with your internet provider.
  3. Review network activity: Google Home Activity may show network insight cards on supported Nest Wifi or Google Wifi setups.
  4. Recheck the speaker: If the voice assistant can answer questions or carry out commands, Google says the device is connected to Wi-Fi.

For Google’s network-specific troubleshooting, see Troubleshoot slow internet on Google Nest Wifi or Google Wifi. If the device lost its connection, or you changed your Wi-Fi name, password or internet provider, it may need to be set up again in Google Home. Follow Google Nest or Home device not connected to Wi-Fi network.

Consider a mesh Wi-Fi system only if these checks point to inadequate coverage or poor point placement. Improving coverage can help a network-related delay, but it will not fix wake-word detection, speech recognition or a broken smart-home account link. If you use Ethernet and the wired link appears to be limiting speed, check that connection separately; a cable upgrade is not a general remedy for missed voice commands.

Check restrictions and account settings

If the device hears you but certain functions are unavailable, check whether Digital Wellbeing settings such as Downtime, Filters or Do Not Disturb are restricting voice features. Also confirm that you are signed into the Google Account linked to the device and, for media requests, the account for the relevant media service.

Send feedback if the problem persists

If the steps above do not resolve the problem, Google directs users to send feedback through the Google Home app. Describe what happens—for example, whether there is no wake indicator, the request is misheard, or a specific linked device fails—so the issue is clearly identified. Google does not promise a particular response or resolution time.
