Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

A working device with a stale tile may indicate an app display problem; a device that does not respond needs power, Wi-Fi, or service troubleshooting. Work through the checks below before considering a reset.
First determine whether the device is actually offline
Try the device directly: use its physical controls, speak to a speaker or display, or check the device’s own interface where available. If it responds but the Google Home tile still shows the old state, the app may be displaying stale information rather than reporting a real connection failure.
That distinction matters: Google’s 16 September 2026 Google Home release notes documented fixes for online sensors, cameras, and smoke and carbon monoxide detector tiles that could appear greyed out after leaving their controllers, as well as locks incorrectly shown with offline icons. These are examples of misleading app status, not proof that a particular device has the same issue.
Check whether one device or several are affected
| What you see | Where to start |
|---|---|
| One device has a stale or offline tile | Check that device’s power and connection, then follow its model-specific troubleshooting. A single-device symptom points first to that product or its integration. |
| Several devices appear offline | Check shared causes: home power, router and internet access, provider outage, and Google/Nest service status. Google recommends restarting the router when more than one Nest product is offline. |
For multiple affected Nest products, use Google’s Wi-Fi and connection troubleshooting and check the Nest service status before changing settings on each device.

Check device power and the phone’s Wi-Fi
- Confirm the affected device has power. If it appears frozen or unavailable, disconnect its power, wait briefly, and reconnect it.
- Check the Wi-Fi network shown on your phone or tablet. For Google’s “device is not available” condition, Google says the mobile device and the Home device must be on the same Wi-Fi network. See Google’s device-unavailable troubleshooting.
- After the device restarts and reconnects, reopen its tile in Google Home and see whether the status has changed.
Refresh the Google Home app
- Close the Google Home app completely, then open it again.
- Check that the app is up to date in your phone’s app store and install an available update.
- Check the tile again, and compare it with the device’s direct response. If the device works but the tile remains wrong, do not assume a factory reset is needed; app display issues have occurred.
Google’s general troubleshooting for setting up devices also includes restarting the app and phone. The support guidance does not identify a universal manual “refresh status” button for every Google Home device or third-party integration.
Test the home internet and Google/Nest service
- Use another device connected to the home Wi-Fi to open a website or app. Make sure it is using Wi-Fi rather than cellular data.
- If that device also cannot get online, troubleshoot the router or contact your internet provider. For several offline Nest products, restart the router.
- If internet access works but Nest products remain unavailable, check the Nest service status and the affected product’s official troubleshooting steps.
Google notes that Nest products periodically try to reconnect automatically after losing Wi-Fi. That does not guarantee an immediate recovery, so check power, network access, app version, and service status rather than waiting indefinitely.

Reconnect a device after a Wi-Fi change
If you recently changed the Wi-Fi name or password, replaced the router, or changed providers, the device may need to be connected to the new network. For Google speakers and displays, follow Google’s instructions for changing Wi-Fi settings: forget the current Wi-Fi network in Google Home, then set up the device on the new network. Google lists a factory reset as a fallback if reconnecting does not work; do not start with it.

Google Home can manage different device types, but their recovery steps are not interchangeable. Cameras, thermostats, locks, speakers and displays, and third-party devices may require different procedures. Choose the official troubleshooting page for the affected model rather than applying a reset sequence meant for another product.
