For a single-color print, export STL; for color or multi-material printing, use 3MF. Set the model’s intended real-world size before downloading, choose an origin that suits how you will place it, and check the exported file in your slicer. Choosing the right format is only one part of preparation: Meshy models may still need mesh repair or thicker walls before they are printable.
Which export format should you use?
Meshy’s guidance distinguishes formats by the print workflow. STL is the straightforward choice for a single-color print; 3MF is the recommended choice when the print uses color or multiple materials. Meshy names Cura, PrusaSlicer, and Bambu as examples of compatible slicers for its 3MF workflow. Confirm that your own slicer and printer support the color or multi-material features you intend to use.
| Format | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| STL | Single-color printing | Broad slicer compatibility; carries geometry, not color, materials, or textures, according to Meshy’s Blender export guide. |
| 3MF | Color or multi-material printing | Meshy recommends it for these workflows and names Cura, PrusaSlicer, and Bambu as compatible slicer examples in its 3D printing guide. |
If you need to preserve PBR textures for rendering or another digital-content-creation workflow, Meshy identifies GLB, FBX, and OBJ as texture-capable options. Those are visual-workflow formats, not the formats Meshy recommends for ordinary single-color or color/multi-material print exports. Its texture support help article also distinguishes texture data from print color assignments.
When parts need to stay separate
If your model has multiple parts that must remain separately selectable in the slicer, Meshy’s auto-split API documentation says that this workflow keeps separate objects in 3MF, while STL fuses the split parts into one solid. This is specific to the documented API auto-split workflow; do not assume every Meshy export path handles parts identically.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set the size and origin before downloading
Choose the model’s target real-world size before export rather than relying on an arbitrary default. Meshy’s download tutorial describes a resize control for setting a target height and origin options labeled Bottom and Center. Set the height for the object you intend to make, then choose the origin according to how you want the model positioned in the next tool.
Meshy cautions that formats may use different units and that a generated model may not have real-world dimensions unless you set them. After downloading, import the file into the slicer you plan to use and verify its displayed dimensions and orientation before slicing. The Blender export guide also recommends applying scene scale for accurate printing.

Check the mesh before slicing
Meshy’s documented sequence is Generate → Check & Repair → Scale → Export STL/3MF → Slice → Print. Its 3D printing workflow names three key success factors: “watertight mesh + adequate wall thickness + correct export format.” Those checks matter regardless of which file type you choose.
- Watertightness and mesh integrity: If the slicer reports non-manifold geometry or other mesh problems, repair or remesh the model before printing.
- Walls and connections: Inspect thin walls and narrow connection points. Meshy notes that weak connections can break and recommends thickening them in a digital-content-creation tool when needed.
- Scale and orientation: Check the imported dimensions and placement in the slicer, then inspect the sliced preview before printing.
There is no single wall-thickness value that is right for every Meshy model. Adequacy depends on the model, printer, and material, so assess the actual geometry and intended print rather than applying a universal number.

Keep texture data separate from print color
A textured model that looks colored on screen is not necessarily configured for a color print. Meshy says STL does not support textures, and its printing guidance directs color or multi-material jobs to 3MF. Treat PBR textures as useful for visual workflows, not as proof that the slicer has received printable color assignments. Confirm the result in the slicer’s preview and check that the complete color workflow is supported by your printer and slicer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical export checklist
- Decide whether the print is single-color or color/multi-material; choose STL or 3MF accordingly.
- Set the intended real-world height and select Bottom or Center origin for the placement you need.
- Use Check & Repair to address mesh problems, and inspect wall and connection thickness for the chosen printer and material.
- Download the file and open it in the intended slicer. Verify units, dimensions, orientation, and whether any separate parts remain selectable as needed.
- Review the slicer preview for geometry and color/material assignments before printing.
Meshy’s recommendations are product documentation, not a guarantee that an exported model will print successfully. The slicer check is the practical final check before committing material and print time.
