If a browser says your clock is ahead or behind, or shows NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID, check your device’s date, time, and time zone, then synchronize the clock. A wrong clock can make a valid website certificate appear expired or not yet valid. If the clock is already correct, the cause may instead be the website’s certificate, a managed network, or a protocol mismatch.
When an incorrect clock causes an SSL warning
When you open a secure site, the browser checks whether its certificate is valid at the time shown by your device. If the device clock is far enough ahead or behind, a current certificate can appear to be outside its validity period.
Look for messages such as “Your clock is behind,” “Your clock is ahead,” or NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID in Chrome. Firefox may show “Warning: Potential Security Risk Ahead”; open the warning’s advanced details and look for certificate-expired, not-yet-valid, or OCSP time-related errors. Compare any time Firefox displays with a trusted local clock. Mozilla explains how to identify and troubleshoot time-related errors, while Google lists Chrome’s clock-related warning and device-clock remedy.
A warning is a security check, not a prompt to bypass protection. Firefox blocks pages with expired or invalid certificates to protect your privacy and data. Correct the clock before trying the site again.

Correct and synchronize the date, time, and time zone
Check all three settings: the calendar date, the displayed time, and the time zone for your location. A correct time paired with the wrong time zone can still leave the device clock inaccurate.
Windows
- Open Date and time settings from Windows Search or Settings.
- Check that the displayed time zone matches your location and that automatic time settings are enabled if appropriate.
- Select Sync now if that option is available.
- If synchronization fails or is unavailable, set the date, time, and time zone manually, then retry the page.
On a work- or school-managed computer, these options may be controlled by your organization. Ask IT for help rather than overriding its settings.

macOS
Open the Mac’s Date & Time settings and check the date, time, and time zone. Mozilla’s documented route uses Apple menu > System Preferences > Date & Time; on versions where automatic setting must be changed, disable it, enter the correct values, and save. Labels and layout vary across macOS releases, so look for the Date & Time destination in System Settings if those older labels do not appear.
Phones and tablets
Open your device’s date and time settings, verify the date and clock, and confirm the time zone matches your location. Menu names vary by operating system and version; Google’s Chrome guidance covers mobile devices without prescribing one universal menu path.

Once corrected, reload the page. The cited browser guidance does not require a restart as the first fix.
Use the error and where it occurs to choose the next step

If the clock keeps changing after startup
Live USB environments, virtual machines, and dual-boot computers can have clock synchronization problems at startup. Configure automatic time synchronization for the environment, or correct the time after boot and check whether it stays accurate.
A less common case affects Windows 10 and later. Microsoft documents a Secure Time Seeding scenario in which stale data from outgoing SSL connections can cause Windows to reset the clock to an incorrect earlier time after a restart in a network environment with no outgoing SSL traffic. Microsoft describes reconnecting to the internet as a correction and documents advanced administrator workarounds. See Microsoft’s Secure Time Seeding troubleshooting guidance. Do not start with registry changes or disable the feature casually: Microsoft says disabling Secure Time Seeding should follow other workarounds, and it remains disabled after an upgrade until re-enabled.

Why changing the clock does not fix every SSL protocol error
“SSL error” can refer to different failures. A certificate-validity warning can result from an inaccurate clock, but a name mismatch, trust problem, expired site certificate, or unsupported protocol or cipher has a different cause. DigiCert associates protocol errors and version or cipher mismatch messages with unsupported or deprecated configurations; changing your computer’s date does not address those server/browser compatibility issues.
If the clock is correct and only one site fails with a certificate warning, contact that site’s owner. If a managed network is inspecting HTTPS or reporting a trust-authority error, contact its administrator. For a protocol or cipher mismatch, the site or service administrator may need to correct the server configuration.
How common are clock-related certificate warnings?
A 2017 Google Research study attributed 33.5% of analyzed Windows Chrome certificate-warning reports to an incorrect system clock; the corresponding study proportions were 8.71% for Mac OS, 1.72% for ChromeOS, and 8.46% for Android.
