Short answer: Halide’s official feature page lists direct controls for shutter speed, ISO and white balance, plus manual focus and focus aids. Apple’s built-in Camera app offers tap-to-focus, exposure adjustment and AE/AF Lock; Apple also documents direct aperture, shutter-speed and white-balance controls on iPhone 18 Pro models in specified camera modes. Which controls you get depends on your iPhone and the mode you’re using.
What “manual aperture” means on iPhone
There are two different controls that can be called aperture. Apple’s Portrait mode Depth Control slider adjusts the appearance of background blur; it is a depth effect, not the same thing as setting a lens aperture. Separately, Apple’s advanced camera guide documents manual lens-aperture control for iPhone 18 Pro models.
Halide’s official feature page lists shutter speed, ISO, white balance and focus controls, but does not list a physical aperture adjustment. So if you mean a direct lens-aperture setting, the documented comparison is not simply “Halide versus the built-in app”: Apple specifically documents that control for iPhone 18 Pro, while Halide’s reviewed feature list does not claim it.
Halide and Apple Camera controls compared
| Control | Halide | Built-in Camera |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | Manual focus by gesture, with focus peaking and a focus loupe, according to Halide’s official feature page. | Tap to set a focus point and hold to use AE/AF Lock, according to Apple’s Camera tools guide. Apple documents a dedicated manual focus-distance control on iPhone 18 Pro in supported modes. |
| Exposure | Manual mode lists shutter speed and ISO, according to Halide. | Apple documents an exposure adjustment and AE/AF Lock generally. iPhone 18 Pro adds direct shutter-speed control in the modes listed in Apple’s advanced camera guide. |
| White balance | Manual white-balance control is listed by Halide. | Apple documents manual white balance on iPhone 18 Pro; the general Camera tools guide does not establish it as a control for every iPhone. |
| Aperture and depth | Physical aperture adjustment is not listed on Halide’s reviewed feature page. | Portrait Depth Control adjusts background blur. Separately, Apple documents manual lens aperture on iPhone 18 Pro. |
| Keeping settings | Persistence behavior is not stated on Halide’s reviewed feature page. | Apple documents Preserve Settings options for exposure adjustment and, on iPhone 18 Pro, lens aperture. Available options depend on model and settings. |

(The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)

- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
What the built-in Camera app can do
Set focus and exposure for a shot
Apple says the iPhone camera automatically sets focus and exposure before a photo is taken. You can tap the scene to choose a focus point, adjust exposure, and press and hold to lock focus and exposure with AE/AF Lock. These controls help you influence the shot, but an exposure slider is not the same as independently setting shutter speed and ISO.
Use direct manual controls on iPhone 18 Pro
Apple’s advanced camera guide describes manual lens aperture, shutter speed and white balance, as well as a histogram, on iPhone 18 Pro models. Apple lists Photo, Video, Cinematic, Slo-mo and Time-Lapse for these controls. This is a model- and mode-specific capability, not a general feature of every iPhone. Check Apple’s current instructions for your device and mode before relying on a control.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Adjust Portrait background blur
In Portrait mode, Depth Control changes the apparent depth of field by adjusting background blur. It is useful for changing the look of a portrait, but it should not be treated as evidence that a particular iPhone has a variable physical lens aperture.
Which app fits what you want to control?
- You want shutter speed, ISO, white balance or hands-on focus: Halide’s published feature list explicitly names these controls and describes focus aids. Its page is a vendor feature description, not an independent test or a complete compatibility matrix.
- You mainly need to tap a subject, adjust exposure or lock focus and exposure: Apple documents those tools in the built-in Camera app, so a third-party app may not be necessary for that workflow.
- You want direct aperture control: First check whether your phone is an iPhone 18 Pro and whether you are using one of Apple’s listed modes. Apple documents manual lens aperture for that specific hardware; Halide’s reviewed page does not list a physical aperture adjustment.
- You want a more blurred Portrait background: Look for Portrait Depth Control. That is a computational depth/blur adjustment, not the same setting as manual lens aperture.
Apple’s control availability varies by model and mode, and its general Camera instructions do not imply that every iPhone exposes the same manual controls. Halide’s product page likewise does not provide a complete device- and app-version compatibility matrix. Confirm the controls on your own device and current app version.

Settings persistence
Apple’s Save Camera Settings guide describes options that preserve selected settings, including exposure adjustment and, on iPhone 18 Pro, lens aperture. The available options depend on the iPhone model. The reviewed Halide feature page does not state how manual settings persist, so its persistence behavior should not be assumed from the control list alone.
