If Excel recognizes the string as a date under your regional settings, adding zero leaves its numeric value unchanged. Format the result as a date to display it as a calendar date.
What an Excel date serial number is
Excel stores dates as sequential numbers so it can calculate with them. In Excel’s default 1900 date system, January 1, 1900 is serial 1; Microsoft’s example of January 1, 2008 is serial 39448. A cell’s number format controls whether that value appears as a date or as a number—it does not change the underlying value. Microsoft explains the serial-number model.
Text that looks like a date is not necessarily a date value. A pasted or imported string can appear calendar-like while Excel still treats it as text.
Why adding zero can convert date text
In a formula such as =A1+0, Excel performs arithmetic with the value in A1. If that text matches a date format Excel recognizes, it can coerce the text into the corresponding numeric serial. Adding zero does not alter the serial; it prompts the conversion. This is a shortcut, not Microsoft’s documented preferred workflow for converting text dates. Exceljet describes the add-zero coercion technique.

Choose a conversion method
| Method | Best for | Limits |
|---|---|---|
=A1+0 |
Quickly coercing text Excel already recognizes as a date. | Depends on regional date parsing; it is a shortcut, not Microsoft’s documented conversion procedure. Exceljet. |
=DATEVALUE(A1) |
Explicitly converting recognizable date text to a serial. | Format the result as a date. An omitted year uses the computer’s current year, time text is ignored, and unrecognized text can return an error. Microsoft DATEVALUE documentation. |
| Error-checking conversion | Some text dates with two-digit years when Excel flags a potential issue. | Depends on error checking and the particular detected input. Microsoft’s conversion guidance. |
| Import settings or source cleanup | Repeated or structured imports where parsing rules need to be explicit. | Steps depend on the source format and Excel version; inspect results before replacing source data. |
Convert text dates with the documented DATEVALUE method
- In a blank cell, enter
=DATEVALUE(A1), replacing A1 with the cell containing the text date. - Leave the formula cell in General format first if you want to inspect the returned serial.
- Apply a date format, such as Short Date, to display the serial as a calendar date.
- Check that the result is the intended date before filling the formula down or replacing source values.
- To replace the original entries, copy the verified results and use Paste Special > Values, then apply the desired date format. Microsoft documents this conversion workflow.
Microsoft’s DATEVALUE example, =DATEVALUE("1/1/2008"), returns 39448 in the default 1900 date system. This illustrates the serial; it is not a universal parsing rule for every regional setting. DATEVALUE function documentation.
Use +0 as a quick check or conversion
- Enter
=A1+0in a new cell if A1 contains a date string Excel already recognizes. - Format the formula result as Short Date or another suitable date format.
- If the result displays as a number, check the date format before assuming conversion failed.
- If the formula errors or shows the wrong date, verify the text and its regional interpretation rather than repeating the formula.
Microsoft documents Excel’s serial dates and conversion options, but does not present +0 as its recommended date-text conversion instruction. Microsoft’s guidance.

Why conversion may fail or produce a surprising result
- Excel cannot parse the text: Arithmetic coercion and DATEVALUE cannot reliably interpret arbitrary strings. DATEVALUE can return
#VALUE!for unrecognized text or values outside its documented range. Microsoft DATEVALUE documentation. - Month and day are ambiguous: A string such as
1/2/2024can mean January 2 or February 1 depending on the regional convention Excel uses. Confirm the intended order before converting a batch. Microsoft’s date-system and year guidance. - The year is missing or abbreviated: DATEVALUE uses the computer’s current year if the text omits a year. Prefer four-digit years and verify interpretations of two-digit years. Microsoft DATEVALUE documentation.
- The result appears as a number: The conversion may have succeeded, while the output cell remains in General or Number format. Apply a date format. Microsoft’s conversion guidance.
- A time is included: DATEVALUE ignores time information in its text argument. If the time matters, use a method suited to the source format rather than assuming DATEVALUE preserves it. Microsoft DATEVALUE documentation.
- Serials differ between workbooks: Excel supports 1900 and 1904 date systems, in which the same calendar date can have different serial numbers. Check both workbooks’ date-system setting before treating the difference as corruption. Microsoft date-system guidance.
Check whether a cell contains text or a date value
Microsoft notes that text dates are left-aligned by default, while date values are usually right-aligned. Alignment is only a clue because users can change it manually. A conversion formula and a checked result provide stronger confirmation. With error checking enabled, Excel may also flag certain two-digit-year text dates and offer conversion choices. Microsoft’s text-date guidance.
