If rubyfmt changes far more lines than expected, first confirm which formatter is running, then reproduce the change on a clean worktree and inspect the diff before accepting it. A broad diff can reflect a first-time, whole-file layout rewrite rather than a code change—but you should review the actual edits and test them instead of assuming they are harmless.
Why did rubyfmt change so many lines?
Formatters rewrite source layout, so a file that has not been formatted consistently before may receive extensive changes on its first pass. The available description of the fables-tales/rubyfmt project says it has no style-related configuration; there may be no rubyfmt setting to preserve a different preferred layout. That does not establish why a particular run changed your files: the command, version, editor, and diff all matter. RubyEvents’ rubyfmt talk describes its configuration approach.
A large diff alone does not prove either a semantic change or a formatter defect. Inspect what changed, especially if expressions, conditionals, method calls, or other code—not just spacing and line breaks—look different. The available sources do not establish a universal semantic-preservation guarantee across every rubyfmt version.
Identify the formatter and how it was invoked
Check the executable name, installed package, project scripts, editor formatter selection, and language-server configuration. Make sure the tool is the intended fables-tales/rubyfmt project, not another Ruby formatter with a similar name. A Ruby LSP issue identifies that project in the context of editor integration, illustrating why the tool selected by an editor can matter. The issue is historical, however, and does not document current setup instructions. See the Ruby LSP issue.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Record the exact command and the installed version before comparing results. The current release, maintenance status, supported Ruby versions, and precise CLI flags are not established here, so check the project’s own current documentation for your installation rather than assuming a command or pinning a version based on a different tool.
Reproduce the change safely and inspect it
- Save unrelated work. Commit, stash, or otherwise preserve pending edits so they do not get mixed into the formatter diff.
- Use a reversible context. Reproduce the run on a clean worktree or a representative file, using the same formatter invocation that caused the changes.
- Compare before and after. Review the diff and separate layout-only changes from edits that might affect code behavior. Do not treat a clean-looking formatting diff as proof of equivalence.
- Validate unexpected changes. If code structure or behavior may have changed, inspect the affected code and run the project’s relevant tests before accepting the result.
This process distinguishes formatter output from concurrent edits and gives you a reviewable record of what the tool changed.

Compare editor formatting with the deliberate project command
If the noisy diff appears when you save a file, temporarily compare that result with the formatter command the project intentionally uses. Check the editor’s formatter defaults, installed extensions, and language-server settings. If the command-line run and editor-triggered run differ, confirm that both select the same formatter and version before changing project files. The Ruby LSP discussion shows that integration is a relevant concern, but it is not a current configuration guide.
Decide what to do about a broad first pass
If the changes are expected layout rewrites, review them and follow your team’s conventions. When project practice permits, commit a repository-wide mechanical formatting pass separately from functional changes. That keeps the formatting change easier to inspect and later code changes easier to review; it does not guarantee that the formatter’s output will produce small diffs.

If the project requires configurable style choices, verify rubyfmt’s behavior and documentation for the exact version in use before looking for style knobs. The available talk describes no style-related configuration. Another formatter may meet different needs, but its settings and check modes are not interchangeable with rubyfmt’s.

Compare candidates against the project’s actual needs: Ruby syntax and version support, editor and CI integration, configuration options, check or diff modes, and the size of the changes proposed for your repository. For example, Rufo’s documentation describes a configuration file and a check mode. Those are Rufo features, not evidence that rubyfmt accepts Rufo settings. The available sources do not establish a current, complete feature matrix or comparable performance benchmarks, so test any candidate against representative project files before adopting it.
