A home hub is an Apple device that enables services such as remote access and shared control. Matter is a standard that lets compatible accessories work with supported smart-home ecosystems, while Thread is a network used by some of those accessories. They are related parts of a setup, not interchangeable terms.
You do not always need a home hub just to pair and control a Matter accessory from an iPhone: Apple says an iPhone running iOS 18 or later can do that without one. A hub is still relevant for other Apple Home capabilities, and a Thread-based accessory still needs access to a Thread network.

What Apple Home, HomeKit, Matter, and Thread each do
- Apple Home: Apple’s smart-home app and ecosystem for adding supported accessories, assigning rooms, controlling devices, and making scenes and automations.
- HomeKit: The familiar Apple smart-home name still found on products and in reader searches. A HomeKit label does not mean an accessory is Matter-compatible; check the product’s stated standards and Apple Home support.
- Matter: A smart-home standard Apple supports in Home. A compatible Matter accessory can be paired with apps that support Matter, though supported features can differ by accessory and ecosystem.
- Thread: A network used by some smart-home accessories, including some Matter devices. Matter describes a standard for device interoperability; Thread provides network connectivity. A Matter device can use a different network, such as Wi-Fi, so not every Matter device needs Thread.
Apple lists these Matter accessory categories in its May 7, 2026 Matter guide: air conditioners, bridges, lights, locks, outlets, switches, thermostats, blinds and shades, and motion, ambient-light, contact, temperature, and humidity sensors. That category list does not guarantee that every product or every feature in a category works with Apple Home.
Do you need an Apple TV or HomePod for Apple Home?
For the current Apple Home architecture, Apple names HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV as home hub options. HomePod and HomePod mini become hubs after setup; Apple TV becomes a hub when you add it to a room in Home. Apple documents home hubs for capabilities such as accessing accessories while away from home and sharing control. See Apple’s home hub setup guide and remote-access guidance.

Apple’s September 22, 2025 hub setup page says, “You must set up a home hub to add Matter accessories to the Home app.” Its later May 7, 2026 Matter guide qualifies that statement for iPhone: an iPhone with iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories without a hub. The newer guidance is specifically about iPhone pairing and control; it does not make a hub unnecessary for every Apple Home service.
Do not plan to use an iPad as a hub on the current architecture. Apple says iPad is not supported as a hub in the latest version of Apple Home, and support for the previous version ended on February 10, 2026.

Do you need a hub for Matter?
It depends on what you want to do and how the accessory connects. For basic pairing and control from an iPhone running iOS 18 or later, Apple says a home hub is not required. For home services such as remote access and shared control, consult Apple’s requirements for the specific feature; a home hub remains part of the current setup Apple documents.
Also distinguish a home hub from a Thread border router. A Wi-Fi Matter accessory does not need Thread connectivity. A Thread-based accessory does need a working Thread network, supplied by suitable Thread-capable equipment. The iPhone’s ability to pair and control some Matter accessories without a home hub does not itself provide an always-on home Thread network.

When does a Matter accessory need Thread?
Check the accessory’s specifications: if it uses Thread, your home needs a Thread network. Apple lists Thread-enabled hub models as HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd generation), Apple TV 4K (2nd generation), and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet. Apple also recognizes a compatible third-party Thread border router. Model and configuration matter; Apple’s guidance does not say that every HomePod or Apple TV model provides Thread.
Apple’s January 16, 2026 Thread alert guide separately lists iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or later running iOS 18 as Thread-enabled for local pairing and management. That phone capability should not be confused with a home-resident hub or border router that maintains the home’s Thread network.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
How to add a Matter accessory to Apple Home
- Check compatibility and network type. Confirm that the accessory supports Matter and that Apple Home supports the category and features you need. If it uses Thread, confirm that a compatible Thread network is available.
- Open Home on your iPhone and choose Add Accessory. Scan the accessory’s Matter QR code or enter its setup code. Apple’s iPhone setup guide describes these options.
- Follow the prompts to assign it to a room and name it. The name you choose can be used with Siri. If the accessory is already paired with another Matter-supporting app, check More Options during setup to select it.
- Allow app access when prompted. Apple says apps must request permission to add an accessory.
Apple says Matter pairing keys are stored in iCloud Keychain with end-to-end encryption, and paired Matter accessories sync through Keychain regardless of which app or device was used for setup. Apple also notes that a Matter accessory can be paired with other apps that support Matter; verify that the particular accessory type and features you rely on are supported in each app.

Troubleshoot a Thread setup alert
If setup reports “Thread Border Router Required” or “Needs Thread Network,” Apple recommends checking the Thread capability of the accessory and the network equipment, turning on Bluetooth on the iPhone, and installing current manufacturer firmware for battery-powered accessories. Also check that the hub and Wi-Fi are connected.
Apple’s troubleshooting page notes a specific Apple TV case: if it connects to the internet over Ethernet, connecting it to Wi-Fi on the same network as the iPhone or iPad can resolve a Thread setup issue. These are Apple’s documented troubleshooting steps, not a guarantee that they resolve every setup failure.
