Apple Music says it personalizes recommendations using the genres and artists you select, your listening habits, and feedback such as marking music as a Favorite or choosing Suggest Less. You’ll find tailored recommendations in Home and personalized playlists in Made For You. Apple does not explain the recommendation algorithm or the relative weight of each signal in the support pages cited here.
What Apple Music says shapes your recommendations
Apple describes three kinds of input: choices you make when setting up your preferences, listening habits, and direct feedback on music. The company does not publish how these inputs are combined, how quickly recommendations update, or whether specific actions such as skips or searches count as separate signals.

How to give Apple Music better feedback
Choose genres and artists
When you first open Home, Apple Music asks what you like. Select the genres and artists that match your taste; Apple says it uses those selections when recommending music. This is the clearest setup-stage input Apple documents.
Mark music as a Favorite
Use Favorite on music you want reflected in your Home recommendations. Apple’s support article states: “Adding albums, artists, playlists and songs improve your music recommendations in the Home tab.” See Apple’s instructions for adding and finding Favorites.

Choose Suggest Less for music you don’t want recommended

Where to find personalized recommendations and playlists
Home
Home is Apple Music’s main recommendations area. Apple describes it as a place for tailored suggestions, including recently played music, personal playlists, and genres you might like.

Made For You
Made For You presents personalized playlists based on your listening profile and history. Apple notes that a personalized playlist appears in Made For You when you add it to your library. See Apple’s overview of recommended music on the web.
Replay
Replay has a different purpose from general discovery recommendations: Apple describes it as annual insights and playlists highlighting the music you listened to most during the subscription year. Apple says Use Listening History also affects Replay playlist contents.

Not every playlist is personalized
Apple Music playlists can also be your own compilations, playlists created by Apple Music contributors or other subscribers, collaborative playlists, or special playlists such as Replay. A playlist’s presence in the app does not by itself mean it was generated for your profile. Apple’s playlist guide explains the different types.

On iPhone, Apple documents this path:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Music.
- Turn off Use Listening History.
Apple says turning off this setting tells Apple Music to ignore your listening habits when adjusting new recommendations and Replay contents. It also hides played music from your Apple Music followers. This is a control over how listening habits are used; Apple’s guide does not describe it as deleting prior history or resetting your profile.

Temporarily pause history with a Focus
Apple says a custom Focus can turn Use Listening History off temporarily. For example, a parent can use this while listening with a child so that the child’s music does not influence the recommendations. The setting path and Focus example are in Apple’s iPhone personalization guide.
What Apple does not disclose about the algorithm
The cited Apple support pages explain user-facing controls and surfaces, not the technical recommendation system. They do not establish a particular machine-learning method, the weight assigned to Favorites versus listening, an update schedule, a minimum listening threshold, or how to reset recommendation history. Treat claims about those mechanics as unverified unless Apple publishes further documentation.
Interface labels and availability can vary by device, operating-system version, and region. The exact settings path above is from Apple’s iPhone documentation.
