Choose a quality for cellular, Wi-Fi, and downloads
Apple Music lets you choose audio quality separately for cellular streaming, Wi-Fi streaming, and downloads. On current iPhone software, open Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality. If the screen shows Lossless Audio, enable it to access the Lossless and Hi-Res Lossless choices.
- Open Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality.
- Enable Lossless Audio if you want those options.
- Set Cellular Streaming, Wi-Fi Streaming, and Downloads independently to match how you listen.
Labels and menu placement can vary by iOS release and localization. Apple’s current iPhone guide describes Lossless up to 24-bit/48 kHz and Hi-Res Lossless up to 24-bit/192 kHz. These are setting ceilings, not a guarantee that every track or playback chain delivers that resolution. (Apple’s iPhone Lossless settings guide)
For less cellular data
Choose High Efficiency under cellular streaming. Apple says High Quality, Lossless, and Hi-Res Lossless use significantly more cellular data than High Efficiency and may take longer to start. To keep offline downloads off your mobile plan, turn off Download over Cellular; downloads will then wait for Wi-Fi. (Apple’s offline listening and download guide)

For higher quality at home
Choose the quality you want under Wi-Fi streaming separately from the cellular setting. Lossless can be worthwhile if your playback equipment and preferences suit it, but it uses more data and storage. Apple describes the difference between AAC and lossless as “virtually indistinguishable,” so enabling Lossless is not a guaranteed audible upgrade for every listener. For offline listening
The Downloads quality setting affects stored music. Lossless files use more device storage than lower-quality downloads; Apple’s cited guides do not give a universal per-song size. If space is tight, choose a lower download quality or remove downloaded items. If you change quality after downloading a song, Apple’s guidance is to delete the downloaded item and download it again with the new setting enabled.

Decide whether Hi-Res Lossless fits your playback setup
Apple says most of the Apple Music catalog is encoded in ALAC at resolutions from 16-bit/44.1 kHz through 24-bit/192 kHz. Availability depends on the track, network conditions, playback device, and region. Higher resolution can mean more data and storage, but the format ceiling alone does not establish a perceptible improvement. (Apple’s lossless audio overview)
- Bluetooth: Apple says Bluetooth connections do not support lossless audio. AirPods and Beats wireless headphones use Apple’s AAC Bluetooth Codec.
- Wired listening: Apple lists wired headphones, receivers, powered speakers, and built-in speakers among the ways to listen to lossless audio.
- Above 48 kHz on iPhone: Apple says an external digital-to-analog converter (DAC) is needed for sample rates above 48 kHz. Check that its connector works with your specific iPhone and wired headphones; a DAC is not required for ordinary listening or all Lossless playback.

Set Dolby Atmos separately
Dolby Atmos is a separate setting from Lossless. Open Settings > Apps > Music > Dolby Atmos and choose Automatic, Always On, or Off. Atmos is available only for selected music, and availability can vary by track, album version, device, and region. Use the Dolby Atmos badge in Now Playing to check whether the current playback is identified as Atmos.

Automatic lets the device choose when to play Atmos; Always On attempts Atmos playback even with headphones or speakers that may not render it as intended. If you want Atmos versions available offline, enable Download in Dolby Atmos before downloading. Apple notes that when you download a Dolby Atmos version, a stereo version is downloaded too. If a track was already downloaded before you enabled the Atmos download setting, delete it and download it again. (Apple’s Dolby Atmos guide)

Availability and playback caveats
Apple Music and lossless audio are not available in every region. A streaming quality setting also cannot override the source track, network conditions, or limitations of the connected playback device.
