For better privacy and more useful alerts in Apple Home, review who can view each camera, when HomeKit Secure Video records, and which activity should trigger notifications. Then check accessory alerts and, if available, Apple Intelligence’s Reduced Notifications and Summarise Videos controls. These settings are separate, and some options depend on your camera, home hub, location setup, software version, and account.
Review camera alerts and recording
Camera notification settings let you choose whether activity, status changes, or a camera going offline should generate alerts. HomeKit Secure Video adds controls for when alerts occur, whether people are home, whether a clip is recorded, and which kinds of motion count. Apple says selecting specific motion types rather than all motion can reduce irrelevant clips and clip notifications. Apple’s camera setup guide describes the available options; labels may vary by software version and camera.

Change camera notifications
- In the Home app on iPhone, open the Home tab, tap More, then Home Settings.
- Tap Cameras & Doorbells, select a camera, and turn on Activity Notifications if you want alerts.
- Set the available activity types, times, and presence conditions. For a Secure Video camera, choose specific motion categories if alerts for every movement are too frequent.
Some camera notification and status choices may also appear in the selected camera’s settings. If a control described here is absent, the camera or your current software may not support it.
Choose recording behavior at home and away
HomeKit Secure Video lets you set different stream and recording behavior for When Home and When Away. For example, you might choose different recording behavior for an indoor camera than for an outdoor one; the right choice depends on your household and what you want recorded. Apple Home switches modes using the locations of devices belonging to home members, so occupancy behavior depends on the household’s location configuration.

Check who can view camera video
In Home Settings, review each person’s camera access options, particularly after someone leaves the household or no longer needs access. Camera viewing permissions are a distinct setting from an invitation to control the home; check the camera options under each person’s settings rather than assuming one permission determines the other.
Set alerts for sensors and other accessories
Supported HomeKit and Matter accessories can send activity notifications, with time or occupancy conditions where offered. Apple notes that not all smart home accessories support notifications. Apple’s accessory notification guide gives the general setup path.

- In Home, open the accessory’s settings and choose Status and Notifications.
- Turn on Activity Notifications, then set a time or people condition if those choices are available.
- Repeat the notification setup on each device where you want to receive alerts; settings made on one device do not automatically enable alerts on all your devices.
People-based conditions require a home hub. Apple also requires each person who controls the home to set My Location to their primary iPhone or iPad and enable Share My Location. If those prerequisites are not met, occupancy-based rules may not work as expected.
Review Apple Intelligence controls, if available
Some Home settings include Apple Intelligence controls. Open Home, tap More, then Home Settings, and look for Apple Intelligence. Review Reduced Notifications and Summarise Videos independently: Apple says Reduced Notifications is on by default and Summarise Videos is off by default. Availability and eligibility may vary.

Reduced Notifications consolidates multiple alerts into a summary. Summarise Videos creates descriptive captions for eligible iCloud+ users. Apple describes video summaries as involving analysis by home devices for relevant activity before footage is sent for further analysis; captions return to the home devices, and Apple says data is permanently deleted from Private Cloud Compute. Apple says simple requests are processed on-device and complex requests use Private Cloud Compute. Apple’s Home Apple Intelligence page explains these controls and its processing description.

Apple says HomeKit Secure Video footage is analyzed and encrypted on the home hub before secure upload to iCloud, and recordings are end-to-end encrypted. Apple’s HomeKit camera security overview also describes encrypted camera streams and says the home hub relays streams for remote viewing. These statements describe Apple’s Secure Video and camera-stream architecture; they should not be generalized to every accessory in an Apple Home setup.
