For a mid-range Android phone, aim for at least five years of security updates and a clearly stated number of major Android version upgrades. Six or more years of security support is a stronger longevity target when a model offers it. These are useful buying benchmarks, not a universal Android standard: support terms vary by model and region, so check the exact phone’s commitment and when its support clock starts.
What counts as a software update?
Manufacturers may use “software updates” to describe more than one kind of support. Compare the two commitments separately:
- Major Android OS upgrades move the phone to newer Android versions. Look for a stated number of guaranteed version upgrades rather than an unspecified promise of “years of updates.”
- Security updates deliver patches intended to address security issues. Check how long they are promised and, when available, the stated end date.
A manufacturer may also describe other software features as part of support. For example, Google’s Pixel 8 launch announcement said its seven-year software-support period included Android OS upgrades, security updates and regular Feature Drops: Google’s Pixel 8 announcement.
Why there is no single Android support period
“Android” and “mid-range” do not determine how long a specific phone receives updates. The manufacturer sets model-specific terms, and those terms can differ between generations. Google’s current Pixel support table, for example, lists seven years for Pixel 8 and later phones shown there, and five years for the listed Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 generation. Google measures those periods from each phone’s first availability on the Google Store in the US; they are Pixel policies, not a rule for other Android brands: Google Pixel update support.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Samsung’s policies illustrate why it is important to check the generation and model. In 2022, Samsung announced four generations of OS upgrades and up to five years of security updates for select Galaxy devices, including select A-series phones. That was a commitment for the devices covered by that announcement, not a blanket promise for every Galaxy A phone: Samsung’s 2022 update-policy announcement.
A more recent model-specific example is Samsung’s Galaxy A18 regional listing, which states up to six generations of OS upgrades and up to six years of security updates, counted from the first global launch date. The page is for Samsung Gulf, so check that the exact regional variant sold to you has the same terms: Samsung Gulf’s Galaxy A18 listing.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
How to compare two phones’ support promises
Put the details side by side before deciding. A longer headline duration is not enough if it starts earlier, applies to a different regional model or says nothing clear about OS upgrades.
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Security support | The promised duration or, preferably, the stated end date. |
| Major Android upgrades | The number of guaranteed Android version upgrades, separately from security updates. |
| Clock start | Whether the period begins at launch, first availability or another stated date. A phone bought later has less of its promised support period remaining. |
| Model and region | Whether the commitment covers the exact model and regional variant sold in your market; check carrier-specific terms when relevant. |
| Update cadence | Whether the manufacturer publishes a model-specific monthly, quarterly or other schedule. Duration alone does not tell you how quickly patches arrive. |
For example, if a manufacturer counts support from a phone’s first availability rather than your purchase date, buying that phone well after launch does not restart the clock. Use the manufacturer’s date and stated duration to work out how much support remains when you buy.

What is a sensible minimum for a buyer?
Use five years of security updates as a practical floor for comparing new mid-range phones, and prefer six or more years if long ownership matters and the commitment is clear. Also check the number of major Android upgrades: a long security-support term does not, by itself, tell you how many Android versions the phone will receive.
These are buyer targets, not legal minimums or promises that every phone in the price category meets them. Android Enterprise Recommended, for instance, requires eligible devices in that program to make security updates available for five years from initial ship date and to publish information about guaranteed Android OS version upgrades. That requirement applies to devices eligible for the enterprise program; it is not a general consumer-phone rule: Android Enterprise Recommended requirements.

Does the phone stop working when updates end?
The end of a manufacturer’s stated update commitment means that commitment has expired. It does not establish a universal date when a phone stops functioning, and support duration alone cannot tell you exactly how long its apps or services will continue to work.
