If Microsoft Edge freezes on Windows 11, first determine whether the problem affects one page, the whole browser, or the entire PC. Then try low-risk steps—reduce open tabs and apps, update and restart Edge, and clear only the browsing data that may help. If Edge itself remains unresponsive, use Windows’ built-in Repair option before considering broader Windows troubleshooting.

First, identify what is freezing

Notice whether one tab or website hangs, Edge as a whole stops responding, or Windows becomes unresponsive too. These point to different troubleshooting paths.

  • One page is stuck: Open the same page in another browser. If it fails there as well, the website or network may be responsible.
  • Edge is stuck but Windows works: Continue with the browser steps below.
  • The whole PC is frozen: Skip repeated Edge data-clearing attempts and go to Windows-level troubleshooting after trying to restart the PC if possible.

Microsoft’s Edge troubleshooting guidance notes that a computer may run out of memory when Edge is having trouble. That is one possible explanation, not a diagnosis or a universal cause.

Reduce load and reload the affected tab

  1. Close tabs you do not need, keeping the affected tab open.
  2. Close other apps or programs that are not needed right now.
  3. Pause downloads and remove or disable extensions you do not need.
  4. Reload the affected tab.

If the page remains frozen, continue to the next step rather than assuming memory pressure is the cause.

Update Edge, then restart it

In Edge, open Settings and more > Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge, or enter edge://settings/help in the address bar. Edge checks for updates on that page; restart the browser if prompted to finish installing one. Microsoft says an Edge update retains favorites, passwords, and settings. Windows Update may also deliver Edge updates: open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. See Microsoft’s Edge update guidance.

If Edge is still responsive enough to close, close and reopen it. If not, restart Windows if you can, then try Edge again.

Clear only the browsing data that could help

Try this only if Edge opens. Microsoft recommends clearing browsing history and cached images and files as troubleshooting steps. Start with the smallest useful selection; clearing all categories by default can remove data you may want to keep.

  1. In Edge, open Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Clear browsing data > Choose what to clear.
  2. Select a time range and only the relevant data types, such as cached images and files. Select browsing history too only if appropriate.
  3. Choose Clear now.

Before clearing anything, check whether sync is on. With sync enabled, deleting selected synced items can remove them from other synced devices as well. To clear browsing data only from the current device, Microsoft says to turn sync off first. Cookies, saved passwords, autofill data, and history are separate categories; selecting cookies or passwords can affect site sign-ins or saved credentials. For details, see Microsoft’s instructions for viewing and deleting Edge data.

Repair Edge in Windows 11

If Edge remains unresponsive, Windows offers a Repair option. Close Edge for all signed-in users first. You need administrator rights, and the PC must be online.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find Microsoft Edge, select the three-dot menu, then choose Modify.
  3. Approve the user-account prompt if it appears. Make sure the PC is connected to the internet, then choose Repair.

Microsoft Support says, “Your browser data and settings shouldn’t be affected by repair,” in its Edge troubleshooting guidance. If Modify is unavailable, the installation may be managed by your organization; contact your administrator rather than trying to bypass its controls.

Check for a website, network, or security-software problem

If only one website hangs

Try the page in another browser. If it fails there too, restart your modem or router. If the problem persists, contact the website owner; repeated Edge resets are unlikely to fix a fault confined to the site or connection.

If Edge problems continue across sites

Microsoft advises scanning Windows 10 or Windows 11 devices for malware and checking that third-party security software is up to date. Do not routinely turn off security protection as a troubleshooting step.

Escalate when Windows itself is affected

If the entire PC freezes or behaves unexpectedly, use Windows’ built-in troubleshooter rather than treating the issue as an Edge-only problem. Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and choose a relevant troubleshooter if one is available. The available options can vary by Windows configuration.

If device-wide trouble began after a recent Windows update, Microsoft lists uninstalling that update as a possible recovery option in its Windows Update troubleshooting guidance. This is a broader and more disruptive step than repairing Edge, so reserve it for problems that point beyond the browser. On a work- or school-managed PC, contact IT if policy blocks repair or system changes.
