If the back of a double-sided print is upside down, change the duplex binding or flip setting: choose Long Edge for pages that turn like a book, or Short Edge for pages that flip upward like a calendar. Print a test sheet to confirm the result before printing the full document.
Choose the flip setting for how you will read the page
Long-edge and short-edge refer to the edge around which the sheet turns, not the direction paper feeds into the printer. For portrait pages you read like a book, the usual setting is Long Edge. For pages you flip upward, like a calendar, use Short Edge.
Depending on your app and printer driver, the option may be labeled Two-Sided, Duplex, or Print on Both Sides, with sub-options such as Long-Edge Binding, Flip on Long Edge, Short-Edge Binding, or Flip on Short Edge. Microsoft and HP describe the same distinction in their respective print guidance: Microsoft’s Word for Mac instructions and HP’s two-sided printing instructions.
Change the setting and verify it
- Open the document’s Print dialog and confirm the intended printer is selected.
- Find the two-sided or duplex control in the app’s print options or the printer driver settings.
- Choose Long Edge for book-style portrait pages, or Short Edge for pages intended to flip upward.
- Check the print preview if available, then print one test sheet. Turn it as you intend to read the document and check that the back is upright. Epson recommends a test copy when applying double-sided settings; see its Windows double-sided printing instructions.
If only some pages are upside down
A document that mixes portrait and landscape pages can behave differently from one with a single orientation. A duplex setting that works for portrait pages may leave landscape pages incorrectly oriented. If the problem affects only pages with a different orientation, split the document into portrait and landscape groups, print each group separately, and select the appropriate flip setting for each. Microsoft documents this issue and workaround for Word 2010 and 2013; the exact behavior can vary in other applications: Microsoft’s mixed-orientation printing guidance.

If the two-sided option is missing
Automatic duplexing depends on the printer model and may also depend on the driver, connection, or selected print settings. Check the printer’s specifications or manual and the driver’s properties before concluding that the hardware cannot print both sides. HP’s guidance for Samsung laser printers in Windows, for example, describes duplex availability as model- and driver-dependent.
If automatic duplexing is not available, use the application’s manual duplex workflow if offered. It prints one side, then prompts you to reload the sheets for the second pass. Follow the prompt and the instructions for your exact printer: the correct sheet orientation depends on its paper path and tray design, so there is no universal face-up or face-down rule. HP’s printer-specific reload guidance illustrates why the steps can vary.

Automatic and manual duplexing
- Automatic duplex: The printer prints both sides without you refeeding each sheet, provided the model, driver, and settings support it.
- Manual duplex: You reload the sheets for a second print pass, following the printer or application’s instructions.
