Start by identifying which app and version is affected, then check Microsoft’s current known-issues list before changing settings. Outlook’s classic and new versions use different troubleshooting steps, as do classic and new Teams. A documented issue may already have a specific fix, while broad fixes such as clearing Teams cache can erase useful logs without addressing the symptom.
Identify the app, version, and symptom first
Before troubleshooting, note what changed, when the problem began, what action triggers it, the device and operating system, and any error code. These details help distinguish an update issue from an add-in, account, network, or local-client problem.
- Outlook: Is this classic Outlook for Windows or new Outlook? The version matters because classic Outlook procedures involving COM add-ins, profiles, and data files do not apply to new Outlook.
- Teams: Is this classic or new Teams, desktop or web? Is the problem launching, signing in, connecting, syncing chats or channels, or scheduling a meeting from Outlook?
- Integration: If only the Teams Meeting button is missing, focus on the Teams Meeting add-in in classic Outlook rather than treating it as a general calendar failure.
Microsoft’s known issues for classic Outlook and known issues for new Outlook are separate and change over time. Match the symptom and, where listed, the affected build or update month; also check whether Microsoft marks the issue as fixed, under investigation, or covered by a workaround. A “fixed” status does not guarantee your installation has received the corrected version, so follow the entry’s version and update guidance.
Check for a documented update issue
Use the known-issues entry that matches the affected app and symptom before attempting broader repairs. For example, Microsoft documented a March 2026 incident in which a newer Teams Meeting add-in could cause classic Outlook to crash and open in Safe Mode on certain older Outlook builds. Microsoft’s immediate resolution was to update classic Outlook; Online Repair was a workaround, and disabling the Teams Meeting add-in was a temporary option for users who had to remain on an older Office build. This was a specific incident, not evidence that Teams updates generally break Outlook. Check Microsoft’s live entry for the affected builds and current status before applying its advice.

Fix classic Outlook hangs or crashes
Microsoft’s classic Outlook troubleshooting guidance prioritizes checks that help isolate the cause before more disruptive changes.
- Install relevant updates. Check for applicable Windows and Microsoft 365 or Office updates, then test Outlook again.
- Test in Safe Mode. Start classic Outlook in Safe Mode to check whether an add-in is involved. Microsoft notes that Safe Mode starts Outlook without add-ins. If Outlook works, open the COM Add-ins settings, disable add-ins, restart Outlook, then re-enable them one at a time, restarting after each change. Disable rather than remove them during the test.
- Test a new Outlook profile. If the new profile works, the original profile may be damaged. Do not delete the original profile or associated data files unless you know the data is backed up or stored on a server.
- Check Outlook data files if appropriate. Microsoft’s guidance covers using the Inbox Repair Tool to scan Outlook data files; consult its instructions before repairing a file.
- Repair Office if earlier checks fail. Start with Quick Repair. If the problem remains, try Online Repair.
These procedures are for classic Outlook. Microsoft’s general Outlook page separates new Outlook guidance and says its advanced diagnostic troubleshooter for classic Outlook does not apply to new Outlook. Use the version-appropriate Outlook instructions rather than trying classic COM add-in or profile procedures in new Outlook.

Restore the Teams Meeting button in classic Outlook
The Teams Meeting add-in lets users schedule Teams meetings from classic Outlook. If its button is missing, first try the basic checks in Microsoft’s add-in troubleshooting guidance.
- Sign out of Teams and restart it, then close and reopen Outlook.
- If the button is still missing, check Outlook’s disabled COM add-ins and re-enable the Teams Meeting add-in if it is listed there.
- On Windows 10 or later, the Microsoft Get Help troubleshooter may be available on the same PC as classic Outlook. It does not work with new Outlook.
For the specific issue Microsoft documents after updating to new Teams, use its reinstall sequence: uninstall “Teams Meeting Add-in” from Windows Installed Apps; close Outlook; quit Teams from the system tray; start new Teams so it can reinstall the add-in; then restart Outlook. This sequence targets the documented add-in problem, not every Outlook calendar issue.

Troubleshoot Teams sign-in, sync, and connectivity
Sign-in failures
For a Teams sign-in failure, Microsoft recommends using the Teams Sign-in diagnostic when eligible, checking for client updates, and reinstalling Teams if the issue persists. The diagnostic requires a Microsoft 365 admin account and is unavailable in specified government and sovereign environments. If you still cannot sign in, record the displayed error code and collect Teams debug logs for your support request. See Microsoft’s Teams sign-in troubleshooting guidance.
Sync or connection problems
If Teams displays a sync banner, Microsoft Support recommends selecting its Refresh link or quitting and restarting the desktop app. On mobile, opening or using the app initiates sync; pulling down can refresh it. For managed work or school networks, ask your administrator to check whether firewall or proxy settings block required Teams endpoints. Microsoft’s connectivity guidance identifies firewall or proxy access as a frequent source of connection issues. That article was last updated February 14, 2023, so confirm current behavior and endpoint requirements with your administrator rather than treating it as a current client-version reference.
Clear Teams cache only when the symptom fits
Cache clearing is a targeted option for certain local-client problems, not a general post-update fix. Microsoft says it will not fix missing messages, unloaded chat history, a missing team or channel, or incorrect notifications and unread counts; it can also remove diagnostic logs that may help identify the cause. Review Microsoft’s Teams cache guidance and select the procedure for your client and operating system.

When to contact your administrator or Microsoft support
Escalate when the documented fix does not apply, the error persists after the relevant version-specific checks, or the issue may involve managed network access. Include the affected app and variant, operating system, when the problem began, the action that reproduces it, the installed version or build if available, and any error code. For Teams sign-in issues, include debug logs; in a managed environment, ask the administrator to review firewall and proxy access to Teams endpoints.
