Microsoft Fabric Copilot can help with tasks such as transforming data, generating insights, and creating visualizations, but it is not one universal agent that can perform every task across Fabric. Its available features depend on the workload, item, release status, capacity, region, and permissions. Treat generated output as a draft to review and validate.
What can Microsoft Fabric Copilot do?
Fabric Copilot is a set of workload-specific generative AI experiences in Microsoft Fabric and Power BI. Depending on the experience and supported item, it can assist with data transformation and analysis, insight generation, visualizations, reports, and other documented workload tasks. Microsoft describes the feature set as evolving; check the Fabric Copilot overview and current release-status information for the workload and item you plan to use.
Example: Data Factory and Dataflow Gen2
In Data Factory, Copilot can help author data integration steps from natural-language requirements, including work with Dataflow Gen2. This is authoring assistance for that workload—not evidence that the same functions are available across all Fabric items. Consult the Data Factory Copilot documentation for its supported tasks and limitations.
What can Copilot in Fabric not do?
There is no single platform-wide list of actions that every Copilot experience can perform or cannot perform. The restrictions below are documented for Data Factory Copilot and should not be generalized to other workloads.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Data Factory Copilot limitations
- It cannot perform transformations or explanations across multiple queries in one input.
- It does not understand previous inputs, and it cannot undo authoring changes after they have been committed.
- It cannot make query-layout changes.
- It may give an inaccurate result when an evaluation depends on data that is not present in the sample imported into the session.
- An unsupported skill may fail without an error message.
These limitations are documented in Microsoft’s Data Factory Copilot guidance. For other experiences, check the relevant workload documentation and release status instead of assuming these exact constraints apply.
It cannot guarantee a correct answer
Microsoft warns that generative AI output can be inaccurate and non-deterministic; it does not guarantee accuracy, reliability, or truthfulness. Review generated text and code, ask for an explanation when it helps, and validate results against trusted information before relying on them. Copilot assists with work; it does not replace verification. See Microsoft’s Copilot guidance.

Does Fabric Copilot need a paid capacity?
Yes, under Microsoft’s cited enablement guidance, access requires a paid Fabric capacity of F2 or higher, or Power BI Premium capacity of P1 or higher. Trial SKUs are not supported by that guidance. Availability also depends on the supported region, administrator enablement, workspace assignment to an enabled capacity, and the user’s access. See the Copilot enablement FAQ and Data Factory setup guidance.
Geography can affect setup: Microsoft notes that administrator settings may include allowing data processing outside the capacity’s geographic region. Check the current tenant and capacity requirements for your location rather than assuming the same setting applies everywhere.

Can Fabric Copilot see data I cannot access?
Microsoft says Copilot’s access to data depends on the user’s Fabric permissions and role-level security. A prompt does not grant access to data the user is not authorized to view. The enablement FAQ describes this access boundary.
That permission boundary does not make generated answers inherently accurate, nor does it establish that every governance control applies to every Copilot experience. Microsoft’s Purview documentation for AI interactions in Fabric says supported coverage currently first applies to Power BI Copilot; support for other Fabric Copilot experiences and Fabric Data Agent is preview. Individual protections differ, so administrators should check the capability table rather than assume uniform audit, classification, sensitivity-label, encryption, or data-loss-prevention behavior.

How to assess a Fabric Copilot experience
Before using Copilot for a task, check the experience rather than relying on the product name alone:
- Identify the workload and item. Confirm the exact Fabric or Power BI experience and supported item in Microsoft’s current release-status information.
- Check the task and its limits. Read the workload’s documentation for supported authoring or analysis tasks and known restrictions.
- Verify eligibility. Confirm paid capacity, region, administrator enablement, workspace assignment, and user access using Microsoft’s enablement guidance.
- Confirm data access and governance. Review user permissions and role-level security, then check the Purview coverage documentation for the specific Copilot experience.
- Validate the result. Inspect generated code or content and compare its conclusions with trusted data before using it in reports, decisions, or production workflows.
Because capabilities and release states evolve, consult Microsoft’s monthly Fabric updates and the linked documentation when making deployment decisions.
