If Microsoft Teams won’t open, first check your internet connection, fully quit and relaunch Teams, then try Teams on the web. These low-impact checks help distinguish a connection or sign-in problem from a desktop-app problem before you clear cached data or reinstall.

Start with the quickest checks

  1. Check your connection. Open an unrelated website. If it will not load, fix the network connection before troubleshooting Teams. Microsoft recommends checking internet access as an initial reconnect step: Reconnect to Microsoft Teams.
  2. Quit Teams completely and reopen it. If Teams was waiting for a sign-in window, relaunching may bring it back. When prompted, complete the sign-in flow and any required verification, such as multifactor authentication (MFA). Microsoft also recommends quitting and reopening if no sign-in window appears: Sign in to Microsoft Teams.
  3. Open Teams on the web. Visit teams.microsoft.com and try signing in there. If the web version opens but the desktop app does not, that is a useful comparison; it does not, by itself, identify the cause.
  4. Check for a Microsoft service incident. Microsoft recommends checking its official status account when Teams cannot reconnect. If an incident is reported, local cache or reinstall steps may not address the underlying issue. See Microsoft’s reconnect guidance.

Work or school account? Check access requirements

Teams access for an organization can depend on its required network location, VPN, account settings, and policies. If you use a work or school account, connect to the network or VPN your organization requires. Microsoft advises avoiding network changes while using Teams and keeping the app updated. If access still fails, contact your organization’s IT administrator: that administrator manages Teams settings and is Microsoft’s recommended first technical support contact. See Microsoft Teams support and Microsoft’s sign-in help.

A sign-in challenge can look like a launch failure. Make sure you have finished the sign-in flow and any verification your organization requires. Microsoft lists these ways to start Teams: Start on Windows, Applications on Mac, or teams.microsoft.com on the web.

If the desktop app still will not open

After checking your connection, sign-in, web access, and service status, consider clearing Teams’ cache. Cache clearing removes local cached material; Microsoft’s instructions note that local message history and display images can be among the affected items. Follow the directions for your operating system and installed Teams client, because the applicable path can differ. Microsoft’s reconnect article provides platform-specific cache guidance.

Reinstalling is a later step, not the first one to try. Use Microsoft’s current instructions for your platform and client. On Windows, Microsoft says a full removal requires uninstalling both Microsoft Teams and Teams Machine-Wide Installer; Mac removal uses a different procedure. See Microsoft’s Teams uninstall instructions and check that they match the client you have installed.

What the results can tell you

  • An unrelated website also fails: address the network connection first.
  • Teams on the web opens but the desktop app does not: you have a useful indication that access works through the web version, but this comparison does not establish a particular cause.
  • You cannot complete organizational sign-in or meet a network requirement: contact your IT administrator about account access, required VPN or network, and policy settings.
  • Microsoft reports a service incident: the issue may be with service availability rather than your local installation.

These checks cover common avenues, not every possible reason a particular Teams client might fail before showing a sign-in screen. Microsoft’s Teams support hub links to further connectivity, web-use, reconnect, and uninstall help.
