Can Microsoft transcribe audio?
Yes. Azure Speech has routes for real-time transcription and prerecorded audio. Microsoft documents fast transcription, enhanced LLM Speech, and MAI-Transcribe-2 options; the right choice depends on the recording, the output you need, and whether latency matters.

The options are not interchangeable. Microsoft’s LLM Speech comparison distinguishes capabilities such as transcription versus translation, diarization, stereo-channel support, profanity filtering, locale selection, custom prompting, phrase lists, and segment- and word-level timestamps. Commonly documented transcript-oriented features include locale selection, phrase lists, and timestamps, but confirm the current matrix for the exact route rather than assuming every option supports every capability. Choosing a transcription route
- For live captions or interaction, check a real-time route and its latency and rate limits.
- For recordings, compare the supported file duration and size with your typical input.
- If you need speaker labels, channel-aware output, filtering, prompting, or precise timestamps, verify those specific features for the model and API you plan to call.
- Test with representative recordings in the intended language and acoustic conditions. The reviewed Microsoft documentation does not establish one accuracy figure that applies to every language, model, and recording.
Can it create a voice from text?
Yes. Text-to-speech (TTS) turns supplied text into generated spoken audio. Azure Speech documents standard and custom voice options, including professional voice fine-tuning and personal voice. Availability can vary by feature and region; a custom voice capability should not be assumed to be available for every language, voice, or endpoint. Know how TTS is billed
Microsoft says TTS billing is based on processed characters, including spaces and punctuation. It also warns that “Charges apply even if speech is not generated due to a mismatch between the selected voice language and the input text.” Match the text language to the selected voice and review current pricing for the operation before sending large volumes.
Can Azure Speech translate speech live?
Azure Speech supports real-time speech-to-text translation and speech-to-speech translation. Interim transcription and translation results can be returned as speech is detected; final translated text can also be rendered as synthesized speech. The workflow requires an appropriate source locale and target-language code, and the supported directions depend on the translation feature you select. See Microsoft’s Speech translation overview.

For the LLM Speech interface described in its documentation, listed target languages are German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Korean, Japanese, Portuguese, and Chinese. That list is specific to that interface; it is not a universal list for every Azure Speech translation mode. Check the current language table for the required source-to-target direction.
What can conversational speech workflows do?
Voice Live can accept speech input using Azure Speech-to-text or other supported models, depending on configuration. Microsoft documents an automatic multilingual mode as well as explicit configuration for one language or up to ten languages. A configured language list can add latency, and transcription quality may be lower in some cases for short sentences. Automatic multilingual mode can produce low-quality transcription for languages outside its listed set when no language is configured. Consult Voice Live API language support and configure the intended language deliberately.

Which languages and regions are supported?
There is no single language list that applies to every Speech feature. Microsoft’s language reference covers speech-to-text, text-to-speech, pronunciation assessment, speech translation, and other features; support can differ by task, locale, and voice. Check the exact feature and locale in Language and Voice Support for Azure Speech.
Region availability is also feature-specific. Before deployment, confirm that the particular Speech feature is supported in the target region, then verify the language or voice availability for the endpoint. Sovereign-cloud deployments can exclude features available in public Azure, so do not assume the same coverage. Microsoft’s supported-regions table is the relevant deployment check.

What limits should you check before building?
Limits depend on API, feature, and pricing tier; file size, audio length, request rate, concurrent connections, and session duration are separate constraints. For example, Microsoft Learn’s 2026 documentation, accessed 2026-10-04, lists an LLM Speech Standard (S0) file threshold of less than 500 MB and a maximum audio length of less than five hours per file. The same documentation lists a default of 30 transactions per second for real-time text-to-speech Standard (S0). These are feature- and tier-specific figures, not service-wide limits, and Microsoft may change them. Check the current Azure Speech quotas and limits for your API and tier before sizing production traffic.
Quota increases will not resolve every TTS 429 error. Microsoft notes that backend capacity for a particular voice in a region can cause these errors; using a voice in its native region or a more popular voice may help. Verify the current quota guidance and regional voice availability before changing application limits.

How accurate is Microsoft Speech?
There is no supported single accuracy percentage for all Azure Speech use. Results depend on language, recording quality, domain vocabulary, and task configuration, among other factors. Treat a transcript as machine-generated output: pilot the intended model with representative audio, measure errors that matter to your use case, and retain human review for consequential records or decisions.
How do you choose the right Speech option?
Start with the job rather than a model name. A transcription-only workflow, a translated transcript, generated narration, and interactive conversation have different requirements. Then check the factors that can change the choice:
- Audio workflow: live stream or prerecorded file, expected duration, mono or stereo, and latency tolerance.
- Output: speaker diarization, profanity filtering, timestamps, phrase lists, or custom prompting.
- Language: exact locale and, for translation, the required source-to-target direction.
- Deployment: supported region, endpoint, and any sovereign-cloud restrictions.
- Scale and cost: current concurrency and rate limits, session or file constraints, and the billing unit for the selected operation. TTS, for example, uses processed characters.
Compare the required features against the current Microsoft documentation, then test with the audio and language you expect in production. There is no evidence-based universal “best” model without those requirements.
