Once invited members join, they use their own Apple Accounts to access shared content on supported devices.
What Family Sharing shares—and what it doesn’t
“Apple TV” can mean Apple’s subscription service and app, while Apple TV 4K is the streaming device. Family Sharing can share eligible Apple TV subscriptions and eligible purchases, but the two have different controls.
- Apple TV subscription: Eligible Apple subscriptions are generally shared with family members automatically. The subscription does not include third-party subscriptions or movies and shows rented or purchased in the Apple TV app. Check Apple’s Family Sharing overview and Apple’s subscription-sharing guidance for eligibility details.
- Purchases: Movies, shows, apps, books, and other eligible purchases may be shared through the separate, optional Purchase Sharing setting. Some content cannot be shared; hidden purchases and certain in-app purchases or subscriptions may not appear for other members.
A Family Sharing group has an organizer and up to five additional members. Each person keeps their own Apple Account, preferences, and recommendations. Features and content availability vary by country or region.
Set up Family Sharing on iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings and tap your name at the top of the screen.
- Tap Family or Family Sharing, then choose the option to set up Family Sharing.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to create the group and invite family members. They must accept the invitation to join.
The exact label can vary by operating-system version or region. Apple’s Family Sharing setup instructions show the current flow.

Set up Family Sharing on a Mac
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings.
- Click Family.
- Follow the prompts to configure the group and invite members.

Check access to the Apple TV subscription or purchases
If you mean the Apple TV subscription
After the group is set up, eligible Apple subscriptions are generally shared automatically. If a family member cannot access the subscription, the organizer should check its family-access settings and confirm the plan qualifies. Individual or student plans may need to be upgraded for family sharing; a subscription obtained through another provider may not be eligible. Apple’s subscription-sharing guidance explains how to check family access.

If you mean a movie, show, or app someone bought
Check that Purchase Sharing is enabled for the family and that the item is eligible. Subscription access and purchase access are separate: enabling one does not automatically enable the other. Apple lists purchase-sharing limits in its Family Sharing overview.
Use shared access on Apple TV 4K
Apple TV 4K can be used to watch shared content, but it cannot create or configure a Family Sharing group. Use an iPhone, iPad, or Mac for setup. On Apple TV 4K, the family member should use the Apple Account associated with their family membership to access their viewing privileges and content. Apple states that Family Sharing must be configured on a Mac, iPhone, or iPad in its Apple TV 4K guide.

Troubleshoot missing shared content
- Confirm membership. Make sure the person accepted the invitation and appears in the family group.
- Check the Apple Account. Confirm the account used for Media & Purchases is the one associated with the family setup. An account mismatch can prevent shared content from appearing.
- Identify what is missing. For an Apple subscription, check its family-access setting and plan eligibility. For a purchase, check Purchase Sharing and confirm the item can be shared and is not hidden.
- Check the Apple TV account. If purchases are missing on Apple TV, review the Store account under Settings > Users & Accounts. Apple recommends signing out of and back into Media & Purchases when needed.
- Consider regional and device limits. Availability and features vary by country or region, and not all features or content work on every Apple TV hardware model.
